Overview

Join the Canal & River Trust as an Ambassador and help to connect more people to our canals. Your role will help to preserve our nation’s history and keep canals alive. You will have the opportunity to support some incredible events, be part of a supportive team network, and gain a new appreciation for our unique environment.

We need your support to help build support from those who have yet to discover our network. As an Ambassador, no one day is the same and you will get the chance to experience a diverse array of volunteer opportunities all across our regions.

The 11 miles World Heritage Site of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal encompass 168 heritage features along the Llangollen Canal from Horseshoe Falls to Chirk Aqueduct. It straddles two counties – Wales and England – and three counties – Wrexham, Denbighshire and Shropshire.

The role

The role involves being on hand to talk to customers in the Trevor Basin Visitor Centre, increasing their understanding of the exhibits and local area as well as enlightening them to the work that the Canal & River Trust carries out and informing them about what, where, when and why of your local waterway. The role also includes cash handling, responding to enquiries, restocking the shop, keeping the shop and museum area clean and handling some general administration. Full training will be provided, but some knowledge of the local area, customer service experience and a little IT skills would be preferable.

To get the most out of this opportunity we are looking for a minimum commitment of 1 day a week. We are currently looking for help on Saturdays and Sundays.

Our Ambassadors help promote the value of our nations canals and rivers by attending events, being the smiling faces at one of our Welcome Stations, promoting our Share the Space campaigns and engaging with potential and existing supporters and customers alike. As an Ambassador you can help not only represent the Trust, but connect more people to our unique environment and raise awareness for canals.

Our Ambassadors are all about public events, specific opportunities when we invite members of the public to join us, learn more, try a new activity on the waterways and find out more about the Trust.

Our other events focused role (Waterside Leader) is for our volunteers who lead activities at events e.g. guided walks.

We have other roles which complement our Ambassadors by engaging with customers on a day to day basis, outside our events programmes: Rangers, Lock keepers, Explorers, Waterside Champions and Youth Engagement roles.

  • Giving talks in the local community to adult groups
  • Promoting the waterways in other ways in your local community
  • Helping at events at our museums and attractions to share our amazing museums’ collection
