Job description

Emmaus Hastings & Rother helps people work their way out of homelessness. Here's how.

CLOSING DATE: 23 February 2026 LOCATION: Emmaus Hastings & Rother, St Leonards-on-Sea. SALARY: £20,400 TYPE: Part-time (Three days a week 9am - 5pm) WORK LOCATION: On Site

Emmaus Hastings & Rother is recruiting a Learning and Development Manager to increase the support offered to companions in progressing towards independent employment and living by expanding access to training, education and volunteering opportunities. The role will champion and lead this work, taking responsibility for the implementation, review and continuous improvement of a formal Learning and Development programme for companions.

About the role

The staff and trustees of Emmaus Hasting & Rother want to increase the help we offer companions to move to independent employment and living by providing greater access to training, education and volunteering opportunities. This will be funded by both our successful commercial activities and fundraising. We will also provide transitional support in the initial adjustment from the Emmaus community to independent living and work to improve long-term success rates.

The key purpose of this role is to champion and lead this process, taking responsibility for implementing, reviewing and improving a formal Learning & Development programme for our companions. The ideal candidate will ensure that companions take part in training and work with individual companions to help them set and accomplish goals which increase their skills, employability and confidence.

We are looking for someone positive and energetic about helping people to change their lives, whilst understanding that many of our companions have complex problems and setbacks are likely. We need a resilient person who can motivate and encourage companions when their own intrinsic motivation is low or fluctuating. Our ideal candidate will be able to communicate with people who have been homeless and marginalised, and they will also need to be able to work effectively with training and adult education providers, local authorities, prospective employers, and private landlords.
