Job description
About Tussell:

Tussell is the trusted source of insight into UK government contracts, a market worth £260Bn in 2024. In a climate of almost unprecedented government spending, our market intelligence software helps companies to win more public contracts by making better commercial decisions. Our data is so reliable that even the government relies on it to track its own procurement.

For a small company, we get a lot of media coverage. Since 2018 our data has been mentioned in the press over 1,800 times, underlining both the media interest in taxpayer‑funded government contracts and our established position as the market’s reference data source.

We strive to be a great business, but what we do also has a wider impact: the enhanced transparency that Tussell fosters helps to make public procurement more efficient and competitive, which ultimately improves value for money in public services.

Tussell has an entrepreneurial culture and is focused on growing sustainably through customer sales, not by raising successive rounds of VC funding. The team is founder‑led and consists of 37 employees with an average age of 29, so it’s a dynamic environment where you will know everybody’s name. Collaboration and teamwork are essential. We have a consistent track record of hiring energetic people early in their careers, developing home‑grown talent and rewarding success.

Job Description:

As a Data Researcher at Tussell, you will play a pivotal role in generating market‑leading insights on UK public procurement to generate sales of our software and upsell to suppliers in the public sector.

Leveraging tools such as Tableau, your research and analytics will generate interest in Tussell’s market intelligence platform through downloadable reports, public sector events and providing figures to the Press. Your insights will also inform key customers on their public sector sales strategy, through various custom reporting and consulting activities.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform data analysis: Utilise Tableau, SQL and Excel to visualise complex data sets and author reports. Work independently through all stages of a report’s process: collecting and cleaning data, creating visualisations and writing detailed analysis.
  • Assist with custom reporting requests: Collaborate with clients and internal teams to understand specific research requirements. Develop tailored dashboards and reports that address unique client needs, ensuring high levels of accuracy and insight.
  • Update Tableau dashboards: Keep dashboards up to date by uploading, cleaning and analysing data on a quarterly basis.
  • Improve data quality: Clean data, feed errors back to the Data Team to continuously improve data quality, one of Tussell’s USPs.
  • Provide data to press: Work with Press Officer to collate figures on topical areas of public procurement. Tussell has been cited over 1800+ times since 2018, regularly working with BBC, The Financial Times, and The Guardian. See Press page for more detail.
  • Attend industry events: Create engaging reports for public sector events, with the chance to attend or present key findings to industry experts. Network and engage with a variety of representatives from the public and private sector.
Experience:
Essential:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent vocational training
  • Proven data literacy with meticulous attention to detail
  • Curiosity and the ability to spot patterns, gathering interesting insights
  • Concise and confident communication skills
  • Ambitious and keen for high‑responsibility, open to feedback and improvement
  • Familiarity with the UK political landscape and/or procurement
Desirable:
  • Experience with data visualisation software, such as Tableau or PowerBI
  • Basic knowledge of SQL
  • Experience in a professional working environment, preferably a start‑up business

Unfortunately, we are unable to sponsor visas. Candidates must have full right to work in the UK.

Compensation and benefits:

The starting salary is £33,000 per annum, with an annual salary review in December and every 12 months thereafter.

Benefits:

  • Annual leave of 25 days (not including public holidays), rising by one day per year up to a cap of 30 days
  • A vibrant office in Hoxton with perks like free barista coffee, social events and a gym
  • A personal learning & development budget to invest in career‑building training
  • A personal wellbeing budget
  • A cash voucher on your Tussell anniversary each year
  • Monthly and quarterly team socials
  • Your own Apple MacBook as standard
  • Enrolment in the company pension scheme
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
Interview Process:

Successful candidates will be invited through to the following stages:

  1. Initial phone call with Tussell’s Research Manager
  2. Zoom interview with Tussell’s Research Manager and Head of Research
  3. A short practical assignment to test your data‑literacy and attention‑to‑detail
  4. If you pass the assignment criteria, you’ll attend an in‑person interview to present your findings
  5. Reference checks
Progression:

We understand that people like to stay fresh and motivated. We believe that it takes around two years to really master a role, so expect to prove yourself over that time horizon. After that, career development at Tussell could take many different forms: investing in your skill‑set to do your current job with more autonomy, or taking on management responsibility within your current team, or moving across to a different team like Data, Product, or Account Management.
