Care Assistant/Driver – Portsmouth City Council

Location: Portsmouth, United Kingdom

Employment type: Full‑time (30 hours per week)

Working hours: 1 day Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 08:00 – 16:00pm; 1 day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 08:00 – 16:00pm

Salary: £20,433 – £21,464 pro rata (30 hours). Band 4 – £25,201 – £26,473 p.a.

About the role: Royal Albert Centre is a day centre offering innovative day care for older people with dementia and high dependency needs. The role involves providing person‑centred care, supporting meals and personal care, planning activities, driving and escorting service users, and maintaining up‑to‑date care plans.

  • Provide personal care and support meals and drinks for service users.
  • Plan and deliver activities to promote mental health and wellbeing.
  • Act as key worker for specific individuals, recording and communicating care plans to assistant managers.
  • Drive and escort service users to and from the unit and on planned trips.
  • Provide moving and handling support as required.

Who you are: You have patience and respect for the dignity, privacy and choice of older people with dementia. You possess basic IT knowledge, can converse in accurate spoken English, and can record information clearly.

  • Experience in a caring role, paid or unpaid, proving flexibility and adaptability.
  • Good written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle emergencies calmly following policy and procedures (medication administration, health & safety).
  • Full driving licence (D1 category desirable). Pass the MIDAS minibus test (minimum age 21).
