We have an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Track Engineer to join our Story Scotland Early Careers Programme. Whilst our office is based in Blantyre, Glasgow, you will be site‑based on projects in Manchester while attending Sheffield Hallam University.

As a Trainee Track Engineer, you will work alongside experienced Track Engineers within our Story Track division while attending Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) on block release as part of their Rail Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship. This unique route allows you to gain practical experience on live projects while working towards your BEng (Honours) Railway Engineering, combining academic learning with hands‑on industry skills.

At Story you will be supported by a welcoming and inclusive team to gain experience of a variety of Railway projects. You will be learning on the job as a valuable member of the team, responsible for assisting in engineering disciplines while learning from our site team and will have the opportunity to manage and build client relationships.

You Will Develop Skills In
  • Railway‑specific site procedures and safety standards (PTS, OLEC1).
  • Surveying and setting out using rail technologies.
  • Understanding and applying Network Rail standards and Story quality processes.
  • Commercial awareness and programme‑driven delivery.
  • Enhance communication, teamwork and organisation while operating in a professional environment spanning office and site work.
Entry Requirements
  • The ideal candidate will meet the university course eligibility requirements as stated below.
  • Full UK driving licence will be advantageous.
  • Experience in Construction or the Civils environment is not required as you will learn all of this with Story Scotland.
Course Eligibility

Applicants Must:

  • Be over 18.
  • Not be in full‑time education.
  • Have the right to abode in the UK.
  • Meet the following course entry requirements:
  • GCSE (or equivalent) mathematics and English at grade C or grade 4, or above. And 112 UCAS points including at least 64 points from two A levels or equivalent BTEC. National qualifications to include mathematics or a mathematics‑based subject to at least AS level. For example:
  • BBC at A Level including mathematics or a mathematics‑based subject plus at least one other from physics, physical science, engineering science, computer science, technology or other science or technology subject.
  • Or DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma in a science or technology‑based subject (including passes in mathematics and two other science or technology‑based modules).
  • Or Merit overall from a T level qualification – this must include a B in Core and can be from any engineering specific T level.
Benefits
  • At Story, we invest in our people. We provide award‑winning training and development opportunities for all employees to help you get to where you want to be in your career.
  • Competitive starting salary with Car Benefit, and salary being reviewed each year of the programme.
  • We offer company pension contributions, national retail discounts, access to our cycle‑to‑work scheme and flexible working from home options.
