As a porter, you play such an invaluable role supporting the day to day running of our hospital.

You will help directly with supporting patients moving to different parts of the hospital, often when they are at their most vulnerable. You’re reassuring and friendly demeanour can really make a difference to the patient experience.

It’s not simply transporting patients between different wards and departments, it also includes a variety of other duties such as sample collection, the transportation of linen, removal of domestic and clinical waste, postal services, security duties and driving duties.

It\'s a busy and active role and extremely satisfying and fulfilling. We are a 24/7, 365 days a year service, completing up to 15,000 tasks a month. You will join a dedicated and professional portering team that work hard together to deliver an efficient service that we are extremely proud of.

To provide a comprehensive front-line support service to all wards and departments within the Trust. You will be responsible for supporting patient transfers, carrying out all general portering duties, occasional ad hoc driving requests and assisting with security issues as required.

You will demonstrate a consistently high standard of professionalism, must be flexible in approach and able to use own initiative to plan workload and resolve problems.

Communicate verbally with the portering supervisor and colleagues by phone and radio and through written procedures, ensuring an effective exchange of information regarding Portering tasks and service needs.

Communicate with a range of clinical and non-clinical staff, patients, and visitors to understand patient needs and other requirements regarding portering duties

Undertake portering duties in accordance with legislation, policies, and procedures

Undertake security duties as required

Identify and act upon any potential risks or hazards within the working environment.

Assist Emergency Department colleagues in the event of a contamination incident, including erecting the decontamination tent.

Maintain and develop own competence for the Portering role

Assist during a fire or a major incident

Drive vehicles on Trust business

Pro-actively support the continued improvement of the portering service

• Basic level of education in literacy and numeracy
• Full UK Driving License

• Previous experience of working with the public
• Ability to work independently across a large site
• A basic understanding of the role of a porter in a healthcare setting
• Proficient in using a PC, software, and systems
• Electronic Communication Device Skills
• Experience of Manual Handling Techniques
• Health & Safety Awareness

Disclosure and Barring Service checks

If the role you’ve applied for requires a Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) check we will administer this on your behalf and the cost will be recovered from your salary, either as a one-off payment, or over 3 months. The level of check required depends on the role that you have been offered. Currently the charges are - Basic DBS check £26.40 Standard DBS check £26.40 and Enhanced DBS check £54.40. You should be aware that if you are successful in obtaining a position that requires a DBS check but later withdraw your application, you may be required to reimburse the cost of the DBS check.
