Energy Engineer – Energy Consulting Team

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Energy Engineer to join our growing Energy team in our Edinburgh office. The role is based in our Bread Street office near Edinburgh Castle with hybrid working.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Energy Engineer to join our Edinburgh team. This role will see you consulting on energy use in individual buildings, developments and campuses, through to international master‑planning projects and studies that directly influence national decarbonisation policies.

Our Buro Happold Energy team specialise in design and techno‑economic analysis for supply, distribution and demand. In fact, we are one of the few consultancies who can fully design energy systems and also accurately model their commercial performance. We’re passionate about guiding clients towards low‑carbon, low‑cost solutions that are suited to the challenges we face due to climate change.

Our UK Energy team includes over 50 engineers, scientists, geographers, and commercialisation consultants. The teamwork throughout the project lifecycle from national‑scale spatial energy system analytics through to detailed design of some of the most innovative district energy and smart grid installations. The Energy team is split geographically across Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester and London. The Edinburgh office has over 86 multi‑disciplinary team members, and 4 energy team consultants with a range of professional backgrounds and expertise working on local, national and international projects.

We are one of the few consultant Energy teams that offer opportunities to work at the full scale of projects both nationally and internationally, including, for example:

  • Spatial analytics using innovative techniques in mapping and big data including spatial energy planning and/or Local Area Energy Planning
  • Low carbon district energy feasibility studies and design, re‑configuring the way we generate, distribute and use energy including technologies across heat pumps and beyond.
  • Campus and major site master‑planning studies systems; modelling, designing and helping our clients transition their estates to net zero carbon.
  • Building retrofit; trading off the potential to cost effectively reuse our existing building versus new build.
  • Town and city‑wide heat network assessments and studies directly influencing the future of heat network policy in the UK
  • We work on projects throughout the lifecycle from research to concept to design to implementation, including optimising and decarbonising legacy systems.
What will I do?
  • Contribute to live projects from the start and have responsibilities and deadlines; advise clients, other engineers, architects and urban planners on holistic solutions
  • Specific projects are likely to include district energy projects and masterplan development including Energy Centre design, load calculations, conventional and renewable technologies and energy policy
  • Work alongside experienced engineering colleagues and attend client meetings
  • Make an impact and manage your workload
  • Undertake testing, reporting and presentations to develop design concepts. Think 'outside the box' to demonstrate creativity and diversity when approaching engineering problems to arrive at workable solutions
  • Engage in Energy team activities so you feel ownership for its success; being at the centre of our online presence and technical development.
About you

You will be responsible for a diverse range of activities, from detailed analysis and reporting, to planning graduate‑level staff tasks and resources, project management and managing client relationships across our portfolio of energy clients. We are looking for a team member who is:

  • Passionate about engineering design, sustainability, research and making a meaningful contribution to society
  • Proactive in taking initiative
  • Thrives in a team environment
  • Has good written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly motivated and committed to professional development
Required Skills, education, and experience
  • Knowledge of UK and Scotland energy policy and regulatory drivers of energy and carbon efficiency across a range of project scales.
  • Technical awareness and familiarity with the sizing, design, operation and implementation of low carbon technologies and key components in district energy systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate detailed design and technical subjects to technical and non‑technical audiences
  • Hold an Energy‑related engineering degree (e.g. energy, mechanical, chemical, electrical, or civil), or environmental science with spatial analytical skills and energy considerations, and working towards professional registration
  • Experience and understanding of building integrated and utility‑scale energy systems, building energy performance and efficiency standards.
  • Experience in economic modelling of energy systems for feasibility studies/options appraisals.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a related field.
  • Site visit experience to build an understanding of existing heat and electricity systems in buildings and to assess potential low‑carbon opportunities
  • Experience in developing detailed feasibility studies for campus/city‑scale energy systems
  • CIBSE Heat Network Consultant – CP1 2020 knowledge and experience
  • Experience in client or owner’s engineer roles overseeing the construction and delivery of district energy projects
  • Experience in developing energy and greenhouse gas emissions models and calculations using MS Excel/or other software packages
  • Ability to undertake research and evaluation of new technologies, policies, and services in the energy sector.
  • Macro writing or other programming languages such as advanced MS Excel skills, Python, Grasshopper or FME.
