Job description
The Role

Join the Eastern Region Special Operation Unit’s (ERSOU) Regional Economic Crime Unit (RECU) and play a vital role in tackling serious and organised crime across the Eastern Region. Our team of accredited Financial Investigators works at the forefront of asset recovery, ensuring crime does not pay. We have one current vacancy within the Proceeds of Crime Unit (POCU) based at Newmarket, Suffolk. Successful candidates who are board‑passed will also be considered for future vacancies that could be based at Newmarket, Suffolk or Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist financial investigative support to serious and organised crime investigations at force or regional level.
  • Conduct asset recovery investigations to disrupt criminality and be at the forefront of using all available powers to recover assets under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and related legislation.
  • Work with a high caseload of both criminal and civil investigations.
  • Present evidence in court and engage with legal representatives to ensure effective management of investigations and hearings.

This is a demanding role where you’ll work with minimal supervision, manage a high workload, and make quick, well‑judged decisions. In return, you’ll gain the satisfaction of tackling acquisitive crime, returning compensation to victims, and making a real difference—within a supportive and inclusive team.

What We’re Looking For
  • Ideally, full or partial NCA Financial Investigator accreditation (including Confiscator Parts 2, 5 & 8).
  • Strong knowledge of POCA 2002 and all related legislation.
  • Comprehensive report writing and IT skills (especially Excel).
  • Inquisitive, decisive, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and tactful communication.
  • Willingness to participate in an on‑call rota for out‑of‑hours financial enquiries (currently one shift every 10 weeks).
Benefits
  • In addition to a competitive salary there are many other benefits to being a police staff member including:
  • Opportunity to join a great local authority pension scheme.
  • Member of the Blue light card scheme where you can get discounts of travel, clothing, food and much more.
  • Access to an Employee Assist Programme that provide access to a health & wellbeing provision 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
  • Access to numerous Employee support groups that celebrate and support our diverse workforce.
ERSOU – Who We Are And What We Do

Created in 2010, ERSOU is funded by the seven police forces that make up the eastern region, with Bedfordshire Police being the lead force. ERSOU is the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit, that oversees and delivers a regional level response to Serious and Organised Crime, and Counter Terrorism Policing for the Forces in the Eastern Region.

ERSOU is made up of both Officers and Police Staff from across the entire region and works closely with the 7 Forces and National Partners. The departments are unique, in that they offer opportunities to work and develop individuals professionally in specialist areas, often delivering capabilities that are provided by local forces.

Working for ERSOU presents a fantastic opportunity for you to learn and develop within a unique law enforcement community whose staff and officers are dedicated to protecting the public from the threat of terrorism and serious and organised crime.

Vetting

Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo Management Vetting (5 years residency criteria) and Security Clearance (5 years residency criteria) or Development Vetting, if applicable, before taking up the post. Please be aware the Police Corporate Vetting Unit will undertake security vetting on successful candidates, their family and others that live at their home address, which will include financial checks. Due to the sensitive nature of these checks, we are not able to supply feedback should clearance be declined. This post is designated a ‘reserved post’ under the Civil Service Nationality Rules and is open only to UK Nationals. Anyone holding dual nationality can make an application but may be required to relinquish non‑British nationality if successful (and any entitlement you may have to a foreign nationality) as a condition of your confirmation of appointment with CTP. When applying please click Yes to the British Nationality Question in order to progress to the next step of the application process. One of your parents should also be British or have substantial ties to the UK. In the latter instance; substantial ties mean that your parent is a citizen of a British Overseas Territory, a Commonwealth citizen, US citizen, EEA citizen, British national or citizen overseas, and they would need to have demonstrable connections with the UK by way of family history or have been resident here for a substantial period of time.

If you’re already married to, or cohabiting with, a person who isn’t a British citizen, you may still be eligible for employment at the discretion of the department. You should note however, that marriage to, or cohabitation with, a person who isn’t a British citizen after appointment may, in some circumstances, result in the withdrawal of security clearance and subsequent transfer to another department, or (if this is not possible or the officer does not wish to transfer) dismissal. Each case will be considered on its merits, considering the ties between the person involved and the United Kingdom.
