Job overview

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and compassionate nursing leader to join our Neurosciences Division as Neurosurgical Matron. This is a pivotal role providing visible, professional leadership across our neurosurgical services, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care.

As Matron you will:

Provide professional and managerial leadership for the nursing teams under your line management, providing a highly visible and authoritative presence ensuring the provision of high quality, responsive services with the needs of the patient at the center of care delivery.

Work in partnership with the Operational and the Divisional Senior Management Team to ensure effective and efficient management of your clinical areas to meet agreed targets within the resources available.

Be accountable for all clinical and non-clinical aspects of quality within the service.

Maintain a visible presence where patients, staff and visitors can turn for assistance and upon whom they can rely to ensure that the fundamental and specialist aspects of care are met.

Support the Senior divisional nurse by leading and developing nurses and nursing practice.

Lead on the development and implementation of the daily operational systems and process for the divisional nursing team, in collaboration with the wider leadership within and external to the division. For example patient flow management senior clinical nurse of the day bleep holder.

Main duties of the job
  • Lead the delivery of nursing care across neurosurgical areas, holding senior nurses to account and supporting improvement where needed
  • Provide operational management support to ensure standards are monitored, maintained, and enhanced
  • Act as a visible clinical leader, promoting psychological safety and embedding Trust values of kindness, safety, and excellence
  • Oversee workforce planning, appraisals, and safe staffing, ensuring compliance with professional standards and governance
  • Manage nursing budgets and contribute to divisional financial planning
  • Support education, audit, and research, fostering a positive learning environment for staff and students
  • Lead service improvement initiatives, care pathway development, and modernisation programmes
