Job summary

A leading engineering consultancy in Cambridge is looking for an experienced Structural Engineer to join their Building Structures team. The successful candidate will work on diverse multidisciplinary projects and will supervise junior team members. Essential qualifications include a degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, a strong knowledge of UK design codes, and experience in reinforced concrete and steel building structures. You will also be expected to communicate effectively with clients and other consultants while managing multiple projects.

Qualifications

  • In depth knowledge of basic structural engineering principles related to building structures.
  • Thorough knowledge of design codes and standards used in the UK.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Perform/check/review structural engineering calculations to meet client specifications.
  • Liaise with clients, architects, and third parties as required.
  • Conduct visual surveys and produce structural appraisal reports.
  • Monitor construction progress through site visits.
  • Supervise and delegate workload to junior staff.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
  • Check and approve work by other staff.
  • Prepare and present technical reports related to projects.
  • Assist Project Leads in managing project budgets and schedules.

We are expanding our Cambridge Building Structures team and are hiring for an experienced Structural Engineer

Main Purpose of the Job

Based in our Cambridge office you will be part of a hardworking and growing team of Engineer/Consultants specialising in Structural Engineering projects around the UK. The office is based in an excellent location within the city centre, making the office very accessible.

As part of your role as a senior structural design engineer you will be working in a variety of multidisciplinary projects. Your workload will include liaison with clients and other external consultants. You will perform complex technical or professional work activities and assure delivery to meet client requirements.

In depth knowledge of basic structural engineering principles generally associated with building structures is essential for your role. You will have a thorough knowledge of design codes and standards being used in the UK. The ability to work in multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines and other requirements is also an essential part of the role.

Additionally, you will be expected to provide direction to junior members of the team to support their development and achieve competent delivery.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform/check/review relevant structural engineering design calculations to fully meet the client specification in accordance with relevant standards, building codes and safety regulations.
  • Collate project information, liaise, and engage with clients, architects and other third parties as required.
  • Carry out visual surveys of building structures and produce structural appraisal reports as required.
  • Conduct site visits to monitor construction progress and ensure compliance with design specifications.
  • Supervise and delegate project workload to more junior members of staff and others as required.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and other team members.
  • Check/approve work by other staff, including third party design proposals.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, proposals, and documents related to projects.
  • Assist Project Leads in managing project budgets, schedules and resources.
Essential / Preferred Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Degree in Civil Engineering/Structural Engineering or equivalent.

Preferred

  • Chartered status with ICE or IStructE preferred, not essential.

Experience

  • Considerable years in building structure analysis and design.
  • Design of reinforced concrete and steel framed building structures.
  • Experience at a senior engineer level.

Additional Skills

  • Mentoring graduates and engineers.
  • Design of timber, masonry, modular and other types of building structures.
  • Producing fee proposals and managing project budget.
