Job description
Consultant in Forensic Psychiatry

The post-holder will provide specialist clinical and professional skills as a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist.

The post-holder will be based at Caird House site in Hamilton as part of the Forensic Community Mental Health Team for Lanarkshire, providing Responsible Medical Officer input to community outpatients in Lanarkshire. There is a degree of flexibility as to which area of Lanarkshire the post-holder would cover. There will be two sessions of psychiatric input to HMP Shotts as part of the post’s requirements as well as shared involvement in cover of the court liaison service. The NHS Lanarkshire forensic service is an innovative one which employs the recovery model. The team includes medical staff, nursing staff, psychologists, occupational therapists, mental health support workers and administrative staff. The service embraces the Scottish Patient Safety Programme, with ongoing work nationally and internationally recognised.

Occasional input may also be required to be provided at the University Hospital Wishaw and University Hospital Hairmyres psychiatric units on an ad hoc basis for patients under the care of the Forensic Community Mental Health Service. The job plan provides time for non-clinical based activities, as well as CPD, research, and audit. There are regular and frequent opportunities for involvement in the supervision and teaching of medical students and junior medical staff.

Proposals for additional SPA time from applicants are encouraged. In addition to the 1 PA for Non‑DCC/SPA activities, the Board is supportive of applications for additional SPA time from individuals with well‑developed ideas for improving services who are able to demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety (including human factors training), Medical Education, Research & Development, acting as an Appraiser, etc. Applicants who are able to demonstrate a commitment to any of the above or other areas and wishing to commence on more than 1 PA for SPA duties should discuss proposals with the identified Recruitment Lead and/or Service Manager who will consider the request in line with the successful candidate’s professional and service requirements.

Less than full‑time working or compressed hours may be considered. Informal enquiries regarding this post will be welcomed by Dr Adam Brodie, Associate Medical Director for Mental Health, Learning Disability, and Addiction services (01698 7530 820) and Dr Robert Gibb, Clinical Lead for Forensic Psychiatry (01698 687 552).

The University of Glasgow enjoys close links with NHS Lanarkshire, and our medical students benefit greatly from the excellent educational opportunities provided by the board in both primary and secondary care. Those who are or who will be involved in teaching our students, or in any other activity which involves a contribution to teaching, research or scholarship within the University are eligible for honorary status at the University of Glasgow. Honorary Status Role Holders are entitled to numerous benefits including a University of Glasgow ID card, use of the Library and other facilities, and a University IT account as required for their role. They have access to all courses run by the IT Services on the same basis as members of staff and are also permitted an educational discount when PC equipment is purchased through the IT Services.

For any application queries, please email medical.dentalconsultant@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk.
