Multi-Skilled Groundworker

Role Overview

The Multi‑Skilled Groundworker is responsible for carrying out a wide range of groundworks activities, including excavation, drainage installation, concreting, ducting, and general civils support. This role is essential to delivering high‑quality civil engineering works in line with project specifications, safety standards, and construction drawings.

Key Responsibilities

• Read and interpret drawings, specifications, and setting‑out information.
• Carry out excavation works manually or with plant support, ensuring safe digging practices.
• Install drainage systems, ducts, manholes, chambers, and associated infrastructure.
• Prepare ground for concrete works, including shuttering, levelling, compacting, and laying sub‑base.
• Assist in concrete pours, including raking, tamping, levelling, and finishing.
• Lay kerbs, edgings, paving slabs, and other hard‑landscaping elements.
• Support utilities installation and reinstatement works.
• Operate small tools and equipment such as breakers, compaction plates, and cut‑off saws.
• Work collaboratively with plant operators, engineers, and other trades to complete works safely and efficiently.
• Follow all site safety procedures, PPE requirements, and environmental controls.
• Maintain a clean and safe working area, reporting hazards, defects, or material shortages.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Valid CSCS card (NVQ Level 2 in Groundworks or equivalent desirable).
• Proven experience as a groundworker on large‑scale civil or infrastructure projects.
• Competence in drainage, ducting, concreting, kerbing, and general civils tasks.
• Strong understanding of site safety standards and safe manual‑handling techniques.
• Ability to read drawings and work to levels or setting‑out information.
• Physically fit with good practical skills and attention to detail.
• Additional tickets such as plant operation, confined spaces, or lifting ops supervision are advantageous.
