SUMMARY:
As a Medical Assistant, you are a non-licensed health care provider who, under the direction and supervision of a licensed health care provider, delivers direct and indirect patient care. You play an integral role in maintaining patient well-being, and contribute to the success of patients, physicians and licensed health care providers.
OUR Department:
Family medicine provides care to patients of all ages, from birth through the end of life. The service line is composed of 40 medical practices located across a wide geography spanning 9 counties in Western New York. Practices are located in each of the six PCASI Regions. Practices are a mix of rural, suburban, and inner city populations. Each geography/location carries with it unique factors that are considered when delivering care. Unique populations include the underserved, refugees, homeless, Spanish speaking, and Mennonite to name a few.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Conducts pre-visit planning (PVP). Works reports for gaps and delinquencies (patient outreach and scheduling for follow up). Completes health maintenance, registry reports (gap work).
- Accurately obtains and documents patient vital signs, history, and screenings. Recognizes deviations from the norms, and promptly reports to a licensed staff member.
- Understands principles of obtaining an accurate EKG and attaches monitor leads and operates equipment when directed. Reports problems or malfunctions in a timely manner to a licensed staff member. Accurately completes appropriate documentation. Performs EKGs when requested.
- Reviews patient medication list and pends refills for provider's approval. Pends provider's orders.
- Collects specimen, conducts tests and documents patient POCT. Collects specimens (except strep) and label to be sent out for testing.
- Demonstrates competency in Phlebotomy, including correct labeling of specimen tubes and ordering of lab tests via the computer.
- Provides clinical assistance to providers and nursing personnel as per delegation.
- Assists provider with procedures.
- Provides instruction and information as part of patient education process under the guidance of providers or RN.
- Restocks medical supplies in exam and treatment rooms. Puts adequate linen supply in place or empty’s waste and liner receptacles.
- Checks calibration and cleaning of test equipment. Preps instruments to go out for sterilization.
- Orders clinical supplies.
- Completes patient forms.
- Submits Prior Authorizations requests.
- Mails provider communications to patients.
- Assembles packets for provider use (exp. ADHD).
Non-Clinical Responsibilities:
- Assists with medical record system through abstraction (scanning and filing) of patient health maintenance and test reports.
- Upon request compiles statistical data from patient records that are necessary for Quality Assurance/Improvement activities.
- Answer phones and schedules appointments.
- Check in and Check out patients.
- Verifies insurance.
- Processes referrals.
- Sorts and delivers mail.
- Collects and posts payments, and may also perform charge entry.
- Maintains non-clinical office supplies.
- Provides My Care Education and assist with sign up.
- Provides Patient Escorts (to lab and radiology).
- Sends Physical Packets to Patients.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
None
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associates degree preferred.
- Experience in pre-hospital care activities or acute/critical care experience preferred.
- Medical Assistant Certification preferred.
- Strong customer service, computer, and communication skills highly desired.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.
PAY RANGE:
$17.85 - $19.50
