London (May 2026) and Leeds or Manchester (September 2026) UK

This role is ideal for a graduate seeking to develop a career in transport planning and the design of streets and public spaces. As a Graduate Transport Planner, you will support the delivery of a wide range of transport, movement and street design projects across the UK, including strategic transport studies, masterplanning, street design, public realm frameworks, development planning and regeneration projects. You will work closely with colleagues across Civic’s studios, collaborating with planners, engineers and designers to shape streets and places that prioritise people, sustainability and inclusive mobility. The role suits someone with a strong transport planning or engineering background, an interest in data and mapping, and a desire to apply analytical skills to real-world design challenges.

Key elements of the job:

Technical

  • Support the preparation of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans and Movement Strategies.
  • Contribute to GIS mapping, spatial analysis, heat mapping and accessibility assessments.
  • Use of TRICs for trip generation
  • Utilise Swept Path software to test vehicle movements
  • Assist with junction capacity modelling (e.g., Junctions9, LinSig) under supervision.
  • Support active travel and street design projects, including concept layouts and feasibility studies.
  • Assist in data collection, survey specification and analysis (traffic, pedestrian, cycling, kerbside, etc.).
  • Prepare high-quality written reports and technical notes.
  • Assist in producing drawings, diagrams, and presentation material, and carry out initial self-checks before senior review.
  • Use industry-standard analysis software and contribute to internal technical reviews.
  • Comply with Designer duties under CDM Regulations 2015 and with the Integrated Management System (IMS).

Managerial Responsibilities

  • Understand project requirements, time allocation, deliverables and deadlines, and communicate effectively with project team members feeding any matters arising back to the senior team.
  • Assist with day-to-day coordination of project tasks, helping to organise information, track progress and contribute to effective team communication
  • Liaise professionally with clients, collaborators, and local authorities via email, telephone, and meetings with guidance from senior colleagues
  • Support the briefing of technicians and assist in the preparation of drawings, models and other project outputs.
  • Attend site visits, audits, and project meetings alongside senior team members.

Behavioural and Professional Commitment

  • Actively work towards relevant professional accreditation (e.g., CIHT, TPS, ICE or IHE).
  • Participate in Civic Academy sessions and wider CPD opportunities.
  • Maintain an up-to-date CPD record and Development Action Plan.
  • Demonstrate behaviour that reflects Civic’s values, contributing positively to studio culture and collaboration across teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including report writing.
  • Good understanding of transport planning principles, sustainable mobility, and the interaction between transport and place.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Practical experience or working knowledge of GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS) is highly desirable.
  • Practical experience or working knowledge of CAD (AutoCAD, swept path analysis, KeyLines/KeySigns) is highly desirable.
  • Awareness of junction modelling software (e.g., Junctions, LinSig) and an interest in developing this skill.
  • Good graphical communication skills, including ability to prepare clear diagrams and maps.
  • Competent user of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative mindset.
  • Good time management and ability to work across multiple projects.

  • A postgraduate qualification in Transport Planning, Transport Engineering or a related field is highly desirable.
