This is a fantastic opportunity to lead the committed and talented team that keeps our fleet moving, ensuring vital services across the City of York can be delivered. You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of all aspects of our modern, in-house fleet maintenance workshop, which includes a tachograph lane and a Class 4, 5, and 7 MOT station. You’ll also work closely with the wider Fleet Management Team to ensure the safety, compliance, and efficiency of our diverse fleet, which consists of over 230 vehicles and more than 250 items of plant and equipment.

Supporting You In Your Team
  • A skilled operational workshop team, including two supervisors, responsible for carrying out repairs, servicing, and inspections.
  • A dedicated office team.
What You’ll Be Doing
  • Leading the operational delivery of fleet maintenance and workshop services.
  • Managing budgets, resources, and contractor relationships and staff to ensure a cost-effective, high-quality service.
  • Driving health and safety standards and compliance across the service.
  • Supporting strategic goals, including fleet decarbonisation, service improvement and digital transformation initiatives.

This is your chance to make a real impact. You’ll play a key role in keeping essential services on the road, lead a skilled and motivated team, and be responsible for a modern workshop operation. The role is suitable as a job sharing position.

The Council is committed to investing in the talent and wellbeing of our staff and can offer a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive Health & Wellbeing initiatives and a reward package which recognises your contribution. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities and, as part of our commitment to you, promote continuous Learning & Development. In addition we also offer a growing range of discounts, rewards and savings.
