Job description
About us

Hoare Lea is a human-centric and planet-conscious engineering consultancy. We offer intelligent and sustainable solutions to complex design challenges for the built environment throughout the UK and further afield.

We provide a wide range of engineering and consultancy services, including acoustics, air quality, building services (MEP), fire, lighting, security and sustainability. Our highly skilled teams use technical expertise and problem-solving to bring buildings to life, ensuring every design is outstanding and operations meet community needs.

We are committed to providing an environment where everyone can realise their potential. By joining Hoare Lea, you will experience a business that supports wellbeing, welcomes individuality, and offers opportunities such as the 9-day fortnight, thriving community groups, social and networking events, and extensive professional and technical development schemes. We offer an extensive benefits package, including private medical cover, electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme, stock options, and up to 30 days of annual leave.

Whatever your ambitions or circumstances, our aim is to enable everyone to develop knowledge, give their best, and enjoy what they do.

About the role

We have exciting opportunities for Fire Engineers at all levels (Engineer to Associate Director) to join in our Bristol, Glasgow, London and Manchester offices.

Hoare Lea’s Fire Engineering group is a leading team of experienced fire safety experts, many of whom are Chartered Engineers through the Institution of Fire Engineers.

As part of one of the UK’s largest building engineering consultancies, you will collaborate with top engineers, access state-of-the-art technical support, and work on some of the UK’s largest and most high-profile projects within a multi-disciplinary team. The fire team also works independently on excellent projects, with many team members developing long-term client relationships.

We have invested heavily in training and research, with multiple research groups to stay at the cutting edge of the discipline. This includes computational and numerical modelling, emerging fire risks, new techniques, and fire testing. For example, we recently led the design and implementation of two of the world’s largest cross-laminated timber (CLT) compartment fire tests in France to validate our detailed calculations for a sustainable timber office building project.

In addition to Hoare Lea’s best-in-class training, the fire group offers extensive development opportunities—weekly training sessions, regular training away-days, innovation days, and access to external training and conferences. We place emphasis on achieving Chartered Engineer status and have a programme to support this, with many engineers obtaining CEng with us over the years. Our team is supported by a very experienced and highly qualified group.

We are active in key organisations such as the Society for Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Smoke Control Association, BSI Group and Institution of Fire Engineers.

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Work with colleagues within Hoare Lea as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and also manage a portfolio of long-term external clients.
  • Attend design team meetings, design workshops, client meetings and site meetings.
  • Travel to clients or projects in the UK, and occasionally internationally, according to project demands.
  • Work on software analysis tools – evacuation, smoke and fire modelling, heat radiation models and structural fire modelling.
  • Produce design deliverables including specifications, drawings, and schedules.
  • Interact regularly with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring a communicative, collaborative and timely approach to delivery.
  • Support timely invoicing, debt chasing, management of WIP and forward workload/resource planning for your own projects.
  • Mentor and support our ‘next gen’ professionals including apprentices and graduates.
About you
  • Experience working within a fire engineering consultancy role.
  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Building Services, Maths, Architecture, or Physics, with a keen interest in Fire Engineering. You will have a good technical knowledge in the primary discipline of fire safety design.
  • IT literacy with a working understanding of fire modelling software analysis tools.
  • Excellent communication skills and an interest in working in a team environment.
  • Ability and commitment to effectively deliver to demanding timescales and good organisational and planning skills.
  • Chartered engineer status is required for roles above Associate.
