Job description

Tony Gee is seeking a lead appointment for development and delivery of environmental services across all sectors.

The role incorporates direct advice to projects, upskilling of existing staff and specifying and working with specialist sub‑consultants.

The company is renowned for engineering excellence – delivering practical, buildable designs across sectors including Rail, Highways, Power, and Marine. As environmental considerations become increasingly central to project success, we’re seeing growing demand for integrated environmental services – both in early‑stage planning and in response to the complexity of detailed design and delivery.

We pride ourselves on creative, excellent engineering to achieve affordable and buildable solutions for our clients. It is the quality of our engineers and our company reputation that gives our clients confidence in our delivery – and we want the same confidence when it comes to managing risks to delivery associated with planning conditions and environmental requirements.

We’re looking for a driven and forward‑thinking individual to lead this growth area and inspire confidence in our clients that Tony Gee can deliver high‑quality environmental outcomes. This is a unique opportunity to shape and expand our environmental offering, working alongside our engineers to deliver holistic, sustainable solutions that meet evolving client expectations and regulatory requirements. Through this role, we see an opportunity to set the standard for what integrated environmental and engineering excellence looks like.

The successful candidate will lead and develop Tony Gee’s environmental service offering, currently delivered primarily through our supply chain, including:

  • Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) – Delivery: Managing the delivery and integration of EIA chapters produced by sub‑consultants and in‑house teams. Compliance: Interpreting and integrating the EIA requirements into engineering deliverables. Interface: Providing a link between in‑house leads for technical disciplines (including flood, contamination and transport).
  • Directly or via sub‑consultants, managing the delivery and integration of environmental consents and planning conditions, supported by technical leads as required.
  • Ecology deliverables – identifying and planning surveys, interpreting and reporting results, and advising on integration of constraints into engineering deliverables and construction projects, including licensing processes and mitigation requirements.
  • Landscape architecture and arboricultural deliverables.
  • Advise on delivery of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and Nature Positive solutions.
Responsibilities

The role requires the candidate to act as an Environmental Services Discipline Manager, ensuring punctual delivery of environmental services for projects to high‑quality standards and meeting financial targets. The candidate must possess effective managerial experience, including supply chain management, and suitable technical expertise.

  • Review technical deliverables produced in‑house or by the supply chain across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Assume the role of Environmental Services Discipline Manager or Discipline Director on multi‑disciplinary projects when required.
  • Manage day‑to‑day staff direction, training, and project work.
  • Act as a role model for colleagues.
  • Develop relationships with new and existing clients, identifying potential work.
  • Develop relationships with new and existing sub‑consultants, identifying partnership opportunities.
  • Coordinate with other engineers/consultants across Tony Gee’s offices and delivery teams.
  • Manage and liaise with clients on proposals and project work.
  • Specify and/or manage specialist environmental services required to fulfil the company’s scope.
  • Prepare fee budgets, proposals and resource requirements for in‑house services, or review proposals from sub‑consultants to ensure no scope gaps.
  • Identify and manage risks for the work under your control to agreed acceptable levels.
  • Support the Head of Sustainability in the development and delivery of sustainability strategy.
  • Engage in promotional activities with industry events, networks and forums to raise the company profile.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Leading and developing teams and business sub‑units.
  • Independently scoping, managing and delivering environmental services commissions for a range of clients including Local Authorities and developers.
  • Experience with Town and Country Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) regulations in the UK.
  • Proven ability to interface with planning and engineering disciplines regarding environmental plans and impact assessment.
  • Detailed technical skills pertinent to scoping and managing environmental services undertaken by technical specialists.
  • Experience of producing and coordinating LEMPs, LBMPs, HMMPs and CEMPs.
  • Detailed technical skills relevant to the design and specification of a core EIA chapter discipline (ideally ecology or landscape architecture).
  • Liaison with direct stakeholders.
  • Liaison with statutory bodies (e.g. Environment Agency, Natural England).
  • Track record of delivering environmental benefits, including biodiversity net gain for clients.
  • Ability to manage time, people, budgets and risks.
  • Experience with the planning process and delivery of planning applications.
  • Experience of Design and Build schemes, including supporting schemes through construction.
  • Experience with a range of forms of contract (e.g. NEC, ACE).
  • Understanding of related civil engineering disciplines preferred, including structures, earthworks, highways, rail, landscape architecture.
  • Use and development of GIS mapping.
  • Knowledge of the BIM protocols in BS EN ISO 19650.
