Job Summary
The Urgent and Emergency Care team at Darlington Memorial Hospital (DMH) comprises ED, SDEC and AMU. Recent developments include Same Day Emergency Care and an expanded medical workforce, making DMH a strong, collaborative environment for clinicians, managers and patients.
We are seeking a Consultant in Emergency Medicine based at DMH. This role offers an opportunity to work with an established consultant team, supported by a middle‑grade and nursing team, and to contribute to a 24‑hour service. Candidates who demonstrate a commitment to education and developing a paediatric service will be welcomed.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive emergency medicine services and collaborate with consultant colleagues.
- Plan and develop services, working with multidisciplinary teams.
- Supervise and assist junior staff, including emergency nurse practitioners.
- Lead resuscitations of critically ill or seriously traumatised patients.
- Conduct review clinics and provide consultant presence daily.
- Attend call on a 1 in 8 basis and participate in senior doctor rota.
- Support the integration of the Emergency Department with acute services.
- Engage in teaching, CPD, audit, governance, and research activities.
- Manage clinical governance, risk and risk management duties.
Person Specification – Special Skills & Knowledge
- Good clinical skills for acute admissions.
- Experience with head injury management.
- Expertise in providing clinical opinions across the service.
- Understanding of patient safety factors.
- Audit experience and ability to run clinical audits.
- Problem‑solving and decision‑making under pressure.
- IT proficiency.
Person Specification – Experience
- Experience in Emergency Medicine and UK hospital systems.
- Supervising, training and teaching trainees.
- Evidence of career planning via appraisal.
- Professional development experience.
Person Specification – Management & Leadership
- Management experience and NHS leadership skills.
- Capability to delegate and lead multidisciplinary teams.
- Strategic planning and organizational skills.
- Teaching experience at postgraduate and undergraduate levels.
Qualifications – Essential
- MB ChB or equivalent.
- FRCEM or equivalent.
- PMETB approval.
- Completion of at least two of ALS/ ATLS, A/EPLS.
Qualifications – Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in Paediatrics, Geriatrics, or General Practice.
- Certificate of medical education or equivalent.
- Instructor course completion.
Statutory Registration – Essential
- Full and specialist GMC registration and licence to practice.
- Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within 6 months of attaining CCT.
