The Band 7 Substance Misuse Nurse at the Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is a senior nursing specialist role responsible for delivering expert assessment, clinical care, and care co-ordination for patients with drug and alcohol misuse issues within the hospital setting. This role is clinical, autonomous, and leadership-focused, bridging acute care with community treatment pathways and supporting multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, effective, person-centred care.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Practice

  • Perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs.
  • Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.
  • Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements.
  • Prescribe medications within agreed protocols.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives.

Professional Leadership

  • Provide specialist, expert clinical knowledge to clinical colleagues, patients and carers/relatives.
  • Undertake clinical supervision of nursing colleagues on an individual or group basis.
  • Participate in the development of services and assists the Ward Manager/Matron to implement change.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources.
  • Monitor health, safety and security of self and others and promote best practice in the ward area.

Education and Development

  • Provide education and development opportunities for others.
  • Develop own “expert” clinical knowledge and participate in the development of others clinical knowledge.
  • Ensure own compliance and compliance of others with regards to mandatory training and PREP requirements.
