Job description

Organisation The Office of the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner

Are you interested in making a real difference, helping vulnerable people and learning about policing?

The Office of the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner manages up to 50 dedicated volunteers who undertake vital duties for its Independent Custody Visiting (ICV) scheme.

ICVs are recruited and appointed on a geographical basis to visit the five police custody centres in Sussex (Brighton, Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings and Worthing).

ICVs work in pairs to make unannounced visits at varying times of the day and night (decided by the ICVs) to ensure a consistent pattern of visits. ICVs observe the rights, entitlements and welfare of people detained, and the standards of the custody centre in which they are kept.

After every visit, the pair of visitors complete a written report form about their findings, which is then passed onto the ICV Scheme Manager at the Office of the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner.

A visit lasts 60-90 minutes and ICVs are required to be available for one visit every 4-6 weeks. The role also asks for attendance at a meeting (60 mins) once every 4 months and online/classroom training events as appropriate.
