Fixed Term Consultant Paediatrician in Emergency Medicine – From 27th April 2026 until 8th January 2027 – Covering maternity leave.

An exciting opportunity to join a growing team in a modern, stand‑alone Children’s Emergency Department by the sea in the Southeast of England.

Working as part of a busy and vibrant team, you will lead on the delivery of excellent care within the paediatric emergency department, in a fixed term 8 PA post, covering parental leave, to complement the existing Children’s Emergency Department Consultant Team.

This post will contribute to the consultant‑led care provided in the Children’s emergency Department and to increased consultant presence at weekends.

The post is 8 PA with flexibility regarding shift pattern. There is a commitment to provide shop‑floor care 1:6 weekends.

Main duties of the job

This fixed term 8 PA post will contribute to the work of a team paediatricians providing consultant delivered and supervised care in the paediatric emergency department.

There is currently a rolling rota to provide:

  • Consultant delivered service 08:30–24:00h in CED 7 days a week.
  • On‑call out of hours covering CED.
  • Consultant cover in our newly opened Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit 08:30–13:00 Monday‑Friday.

The new posts could include the opportunity to rotate through the following clinical areas if desired:

  • Paediatric Burns service at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.
  • Child protection medical service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Provide consistently excellent consultant delivered and supervised care in the paediatric emergency department.
  • Work as part of the consultant, nursing and directorate team to protect and enhance the reputation of the hospital, leading its development as the children’s hospital for the South East Coast region.
  • Work collaboratively with other specialties.
  • Contribute to undergraduate teaching of medical students at BSMS.
  • Provide high‑quality postgraduate teaching and experience to doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in training.
  • Support junior doctors in clinical and educational supervisor roles.
  • Ensure our personal and organisational responsibility for safeguarding children and young people is honoured effectively.
  • Ensure the delivery of safe and high‑quality services for children, responsive to the needs of them and their families.
  • Contribute to the delivery of services which are financially responsible and efficient.
  • Work with the Academic Department of Paediatrics and BSMS to establish a respected research programme and presence in national and international peer‑reviewed journals and meetings.
  • Work effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, including the CAMHS liaison service.
  • Support the development of innovative models of care, including the development of advanced nursing roles.

The post holder also accepts occasional emergency duties at the request of the appropriate consultant, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. Additional commitments arising under this sub‑section are exceptions and should not be required on a regular basis.

Experience/Qualifications
  • MRCPCH or its recognised equivalent.
  • Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC or be eligible for registration within six months of the interview.
  • If trained in the UK, you must also have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Paediatrics or be within six months of receiving it by the interview date.
  • If trained outside the UK, you must provide evidence that your qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT. (Equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by the date of AAC.)

  • Paediatric Emergency Medicine skills and experience.
  • Evidence of having undertaken own development to improve understanding of equalities issues.
Knowledge
  • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.

  • Experience and ability to work in multi‑professional teams.
  • Understanding of NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints.
  • Evidence of managerial skills: achievements / courses attended.
