Post: Teacher of Science

Contract Type: Permanent, starting 1st September 2026

Salary Range: MPS 1 – UPS 3 (£32,916 - £51,048 FTE)

Working Type: Full Time

Base: Thorp Academy, Main Road Ryton, Tyne & Wear, NE40 3AH

This post holder will be engaging in regulated activity, working mainly or wholly with children. This position is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offender’s Act 1974. It is an offence to apply for this role if you are barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.

Northern Education Trust (NET) is a charitable education trust with a track record for school improvement. The Trust sponsors 30 academies; 17 secondary and 13 primaries across the North of England in fourteen Local Authority regions.

Department context

The Science department at Thorp Academy consistently helps Year 11 students to produce outstanding results. Science results have been above national average for consecutive years and we are one of the highest performing Science departments in Northern Education Trust. Triple Science is a popular choice at Thorp and in 2025 over 40% of triple students achieved grade 7+ in all 3 exams, with 5 students achieving x3 grade 9s. 17% of our combined science students achieved x2 grade 7s or higher. At A-level in 2025, 38% of our Year 13 students achieved a grade A or A*. We continue to offer all 3 Sciences and BTEC Science across all key stages including Key Stage 5 to support pupils of all abilities.

At Thorp Academy, members of the Science department provide formal, high quality mentoring to ECTs, and are proud of the success they experience. Science pedagogy is at the heart of staff training with weekly high quality CPD from school leaders and subject directors, plus access to internal and professional qualifications through the NET Staff College.

Responsibilities
  • Provide high quality science teaching and contribute to the continuing high performance of the department.
  • Deliver engaging learning experiences, monitor pupil progress, and support pupils across all key stages including Key Stage 5.
  • Mentor and support Early Career Teachers (ECTs) and participate in staff development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with subject directors and participate in CPD through the NET Staff College.
