Job description
Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – SEMH School

Location: Crewe

Contract: Temporary to Permanent

Hours: Full-time | Term-time only

Simply Education are proud to be working in partnership with a specialist SEMH school in Crewe supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. This is a setting where progress is measured not only through academic outcomes, but through confidence, emotional regulation, and positive personal development.

The school provides a structured, nurturing, and supportive environment where pupils are supported to rebuild trust, manage emotions, and re-engage with learning at a pace suited to their individual needs.

About The Role

This HLTA position offers far more than a traditional classroom role. You will act as a positive role model, calm presence, and consistent support for pupils who require stability and understanding.

You will work closely with pupils who may present challenging behaviour, supporting emotional regulation, resilience, and access to learning through tailored approaches. The role also includes planned and short-notice class cover, requiring confidence in leading learning and maintaining consistency within the classroom.

Every day is varied, fast-paced, and genuinely rewarding. This temporary to permanent opportunity is ideal for someone who thrives on challenge, values strong relationships, and believes in second chances.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils
  • Deliver planned and short-notice whole-class cover, following pre-prepared lesson plans
  • Lead learning activities across the curriculum during teacher absence
  • Adapt teaching approaches to meet pupils' SEMH needs
  • Maintain consistent routines, expectations, and boundaries
  • Use recognised de-escalation and behaviour management strategies
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff, and external professionals
  • Provide feedback to teaching staff on pupil engagement, behaviour, and progress
  • Help maintain a calm, safe, and supportive learning environment.

You will play a key role in promoting positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and personal development across the school.

What's in It for You?
  • Temporary to permanent opportunity for the right candidate
  • Supportive leadership team and clear behaviour policies
  • Ongoing professional development and training
  • A rewarding role where you can see the impact you make every day
  • Competitive pay, dependent on experience
