Job description

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Immunisation Nurse to join our School-aged Immunisation Service.

This permanent vacancy is for three days per week, core hours 8:00am - 4:00pm, with flexibility required to start earlier to pack vaccines or finish later to run after-school clinics.

SCFT's Immunisation Service vaccinates children in schools and clinics across West Sussex, East Sussex and Brighton and Hove.

Although this post is based within the Uckfield team, our whole service approach requires joint working across the whole of Sussex.

Please note that this is a part time role of 22.5 hours per week with the salary range of £18,629.40 to £22,677.60 per annum dependent on experience.

Please note: Due to recent changes in UK immigration and visa rules, this role may not be eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Applicants who do not currently have the right to work in the UK may not be considered. Candidates requiring sponsorship should review the eligibility criteria on the gov.uk websitebefore applying to assess their eligibility for a Certificate of Sponsorship for this role.

Main duties of the job

Our innovative and dynamic Immunisation teams are dedicated to improving immunisation uptake and delivering the national evidence-based Schools' Immunisation Programmes. This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy, yet friendly team of nurses, assistants and administrators.

The role encompasses responsibility for clinical delivery of vaccinations and patient safety, specialist advice on immunisation issues, and the opportunity to develop skills in both independent and team working.

We welcome applicants who can demonstrate a willingness to work flexibly and cooperatively with colleagues both within their own team and the wider multidisciplinary teams across the whole SCFT area. You will need to be motivated, conscientious and committed to supporting us to maintain high vaccination coverage across Sussex.

The team visits several schools across the county daily, so you would be likely to visit a different school each day during school term time and carry out catch-up clinics during the school holidays. We currently offer HPV and Teenage booster vaccinations in secondary schools and nasal spray flu vaccinations to eligible cohorts within schools. We also offer the neonatal BCG programme and other immunisations, such as MMR vaccinations.

We are the main provider of NHS community services across East and West Sussex, with 6,000 staff serving 1.3 million people. We deliver essential care to adults and children, helping them manage their health, avoid hospital admissions, and reduce hospital stays.

  • Cost-effective workplace nurseries in Crawley, Hove, and Brighton
  • Active EMBRACE, Disability & Wellbeing, LGBTQIA+, and Religion & Belief network
  • Level 3 Disability Confident Leader and Veteran Aware Trust
  • Beautiful Sussex location near the South Downs and coast

Our values--Compassionate Care, Working Together, Achieving Ambitions, Delivering Excellence--guide everything we do.

We embrace diversity and encourage applications from all backgrounds, particularly from ethnically diverse, disabled, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. We aim to create an inclusive environment and support reasonable adjustments during recruitment.

This post may close early if sufficient applications are received.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will work in schools, clinics and family homes with children, young people and babies to deliver vaccinations in a safe and professional way. Engagement with hard to reach groups such as travellers and children who are looked after is another aspect of the service's remit and the Band 5 Immunisation Nurse responsibilities will include supporting this work in the community. The ability to communicate well and remain calm under pressure is essential.

The role requires working core hours of 8:00am - 4:00pm with flexibility required at either end of the day for packing of vaccines and clinic cover, on a rota basis within the team. We also run Saturday clinics, which you would be required to cover once per term.

All team members support the whole of the SCFT Immunisation Service, so you must be a car owner-driver and be willing to travel to clinics and schools within Sussex.
