Overview

The Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) in Newcastle is one of the country's leading cancer treatment facilities located in 2 purpose-built centres one at the Freeman Hospital and at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, providing radiotherapy services to the population of the Northeast and Cumbria.

The radiotherapy department in Newcastle benefits from state-of-the-art equipment which includes 2 Novalis Truebeam STX linacs with stereotactic capability, 5 Varian TrueBeam linacs 2 with SGRT. In addition, a further Varian TrueBeam equipped with Hypersight imaging and C-RAD Catalyst surface guidance system is due to go clinical April 2026

ThePre-treatmentImaging section comprises 2 Siemens CT scanners with ProSoma virtual simulation and Raystation planning system, and a dedicated MRI scanner. The provision of this MRI scanner in the department has enabled us to be at the forefront of the development of the use of MRI within radiotherapy planning and MRI only planning pathways.

The Carlisle department has 2 Truebeam linacs, 1 with SGRT, a Siemens CT and access to sessions on a diagnostic MRI for radiotherapy planning.

Main duties of the job

NCCC is committed to delivering a high-quality radiotherapy service, maintaining the highest specification equipment and contributing to radiotherapy research and development.

Applications are invited from qualified therapeutic radiographers with extensive post graduate experience and experience at advanced practice/ superintendent level in a large, modern radiotherapy centre.

The post-holder will work within the department ensuring the highest quality of technical practice, patient care and ensure workload targets are achieved. The post holder will be required to have a flexible approach to working hours to accommodate service demands.

Job responsibilities

Lead radiographer responsible for implementing, evaluating and maintaining the development of radiotherapy techniques and clinical practice in the treatment and pre-treatment setting at NCCC alongside the Technical Lead in Carlisle.

To act as technical radiotherapy advisor and to support radiotherapy service development through clinical implementation of technical strategies and /or process change in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. To include risk assessment, audit, reporting and presenting outcomes of change.

Lead the clinical implementation of new technologies and techniques.

Implement, design and develop IGRT/ IMRT/SGRT

Organise, facilitate and deliver training for IGRT/IMRT/SGRT to Therapeutic Radiographers maintaining training records and other relevant documentation.

Advises developments and oversee technical changes in the department in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team

To provide expert support for radiotherapy treatment delivery and imaging, facilitating the development of new practice models and systems of work.

Implement and maintain development of radiotherapy technique and practice.

Highlight areas of research and technical development. Assist in the design and facilitation of research to develop the service

Oversee implementation of new techniques & systems of working.

Develop lines of communication with outside agencies, manufacturers and peers.

Reporting and publicising developments for publication, conference presentations etc.

To assist in the strategic planning of radiotherapy services and play a pivotal role in equipment selection.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
  • BSc in Radiotherapy or equivalent qualification
  • State registered therapy radiographer with extensive postgraduate experience and experience at advanced practice/superintendent level in a large, modern radiotherapy centre
  • Working towards or holds an M-level award relating to specialist area
Knowledge and Experience
  • In-depth knowledge and expertise in the application and critical assessment of radiotherapy techniques and IGRT
  • In-depth knowledge of radiotherapy treatment & imaging equipment
  • Evidence of continuing professional & personal development, willing to undertake further education appropriate to the post
  • Experience of service re-design and management of change
  • Experience of strategic planning
  • Previous experience at Superintendent grade
Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent organisational, communication, interpersonal, decision making, negotiating and technical skills
  • Excellent time management, able to teach, train, motivate and inspire
