Summary

About the Role:

We are hiring high-impact Developers / Senior Developers to join our core product teams in the Doncaster hub. You will be placed at the heart of the customer journey, managing the secure, high-volume systems that power Payments, Delivery, and Customer Registration for one of the largest online retail platforms in the UK. Your code will directly handle millions of transactions, supporting over 10 million active customers across more than 150 international sites.
While you’ll have heard our name, there’s a lot you probably don’t know about NEXT. We create nearly all of our systems ourselves—from our massive global eCommerce website to mobile apps and internal applications. We are growing fast, and that growth is creating exciting opportunities for engineers to build and own systems at massive retail scale.

About the team:

We are hiring across the Online Ordering Product Group, which sits at the heart of the customer journey, managing critical areas from the moment a customer chooses an item to the point of purchase and account management.
You will join 1 of 3 high-impact, cross-functional teams in our Doncaster hub, each with a focused mission:

  • Checkout Payments: Operating in a highly regulated area, this team ensures our payment options (including wallets, express payments, and international currency) are secure, compliant, and seamless. Quality cannot be compromised. Working in a high-compliance, zero-defect environment, your code directly handles millions of transactions, demanding deep expertise in security, international currency, and payment gateway integration.
  • Checkout Delivery: Focused on the crucial step of delivery selection, working with external services to provide accurate options and expectations for our global customer base. Solving complex logistical problems by orchestrating real-time delivery logic, working with external services to provide accurate and globally scalable options across 70+ international markets.
  • My Account: Manages the customer profile space, focusing exclusively on new customer Sign Up, Auth, and the associated integration points critical for secure customer onboarding.

The role:

You will be a key player in our multi-year strategic programme to refactor core monolith functionality into modern, cloud-native services. This role is not just maintenance; it is platform engineering at retail scale, requiring an active contribution to technical design, architecture review, and the implementation of resilient, highly-available systems in Azure.
We are looking for enthusiastic, hardworking team players to join us as a Developer. You will be key in injecting energy and driving the quality of execution across our product group.
You will work on highly visible features as part of cross-functional projects. This involves engaging with complex, mixed codebases - from legacy monoliths to modern, cloud-based architectures. This role requires pace, technical expertise, and a can‑do attitude to meet hard deadlines and deliver high-impact, performant features.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Software Delivery: Write, test, and deploy high-quality code from concept through to delivery and beyond.
  • Problem Solving: Apply imaginative solutions to complex problems in a demanding, fast-paced retail environment.
  • Collaboration: Work effectively with Product Owners and necessary departments across the business.
  • Support: Provide development support to internal users and offer out‑of‑hours cover on a rota basis.
  • Improvement: Continually feedback your expertise and experience to help drive internal best practices.

You’ll be doing all this from our office in Doncaster. A fast‑paced, encouraging and supportive environment in which everyone brings an energy and a commitment to delivering for our customers and their own careers.

Our Product‑led teams operate with a high degree of autonomy. Developers own the full lifecycle of their features, from technical design and code review to automated deployment and production monitoring (DevOps culture). You will be empowered to drive the technical direction of your specific product area.
Your Career Trajectory: With new roles across 3 complex, mission‑critical product areas, we provide a clearly defined and measurable path to Senior Developer, Lead Developer and beyond. Your diverse exposure to Payments, Delivery, and Registration logic offers exceptional opportunities for rapid technical specialisation and career advancement within the wider Online Ordering Group.

Bring your energy. Play to your strengths. Let’s Take It On.

About You:

Skills and Capabilities

We are looking for those who possess a strong technical foundation and the right cultural fit.

Required Technical Stack

  • Proficient in Microsoft‑based technologies such as ASP.NET MVC, WCF Services, Web API and Azure.
  • Experience in SQL Server.
  • Knowledge of other modern concepts and practices, including Observability, automation, and DevOps.
  • A strong commitment to quality: you defensively code, inject dependencies, and understand the vital importance of unit testing.

Cultural and Leadership Fit

  • A confident team player who brings energy, embraces a challenge, and contributes actively to team success.
  • Strong, structured communication skills to present technical information clearly to peers and stakeholders.
  • A commitment to driving pace and quality, demonstrating the "can‑do" attitude required to meet hard deadlines.

Additional Expectations for the Senior Developer Role

For candidates applying at the Senior Developer level, you will be expected to step up and provide technical leadership.

You will:

  • Mentoring: Mentor and actively support the growth and development of junior team members.
  • Technical Direction: Help direct the team’s technical approach, ensuring quality and alignment with the wider company strategy.

We are hiring across all levels: While our primary focus is the Developer and Senior Developer roles, we encourage applications from Trainee, Junior, and Lead Developers who possess the right technical capability and cultural drive to succeed.
