About Building Control

The Building Control service is a key part of the Growth Directorate, working closely with Planning. We are a well‑resourced, friendly team of 15 professionals committed to providing a wide range of services, including compliance assessments, site inspections, enforcement, and demolition notices. We embrace an agile working approach, offering flexibility to work from office or home.

About the Role

As Deputy Head of Building Control, you will manage a team of eight inspectors to deliver safety, compliance, and quality for complex/high‑risk construction projects within Barnet and the wider region. You will guide the assessment of building plans, inspections, and compliance to Building Regulations, coordinating with regulators, architects, engineers, and contractors. Your leadership will support Barnet’s ambitious housing targets.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Excellent knowledge of legislation, regulations, and professional codes for the service area, including Building Act 1984, Building Safety Act 2022, and Building Regulations 2010.
  • Qualified Level 3 Building Inspector.
  • Degree/Masters in a relevant subject (Building Control, Building Surveying, Construction, Structural Engineering) or equivalent.
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional body (RICS, CABE, CIOB) with CPD evidence.
  • Ability to examine principal designers’ plans, conduct site inspections, compile reports, and keep written records justifying decisions under the Building Regulations 2010 and the Building Safety Act 2022.
  • Experience managing or mentoring junior staff or leading large projects in Building Control or a similar technical area.
  • Ability to motivate staff, set priorities, and plan work to meet standards and deadlines.
