Job overview

This is a substantive post at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage and comprises 10 programmed activities (PAs), including an on‑call commitment to the emergency endoscopy rota. The successful applicant will work closely with the existing 12 Gastroenterologists and 4 Hepatologists to provide a high‑standard Gastroenterology service to the Trust. Clinics may be at any of three sites: Lister Hospital, the New QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City or Hertford County Hospital, Hertford.

Main duties of the job

It is expected that the applicant will complement an existing department offering gastroenterology and liver services. Across the Trust the care of GI and liver inpatients is centralised at the Lister site, with consultants involved in a 1 in 12 GI bleeding rota that incorporates a 24/7 bleed service and routine endoscopy at weekends whilst on‑call. The post does not include a commitment to the general medical on‑call rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Maintenance of high‑quality patient‑centred care
  • Shared responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of the service and participation in strategic planning
  • Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service
  • Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity
  • Active participation in continuing medical education
Qualifications/Training
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview, or provide GMC‑confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification
Previous Experience
  • Broad range of experience in Gastroenterology – Diagnostic and Therapeutic Gastroscopy – Diagnostic and Therapeutic Colonoscopy
  • Experience supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
  • Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
  • Evidence of leading on patient safety issues and achieving change in practice
  • Demonstrable experience in a Locum Consultant role
Skills
  • Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and identification of errors and learning from errors
  • Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation
Knowledge
  • Understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence‑based practice, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all domains within the GMC standards of Good Medical Practice

  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to the specialty
  • Experience and evidence of engagement around equality, diversity and inclusion agenda; actively support a culture recognising and promoting equality, valuing diversity, and lead by example
