Role description: As a Consultant Ecologist, you would be joining our team of over 50 ecologists with more than 30 years of experience undertaking ecological surveys and assessments, and providing advice on soil, land use, hydrological and sustainable drainage issues, arboriculture, ecosystem service, natural capital assessment, biodiversity strategies and metrics, and cultural heritage. We have undertaken over 2,000 projects across the UK, Europe and beyond for public and private clients.

Your work could involve protected species, pollution, surface water, materials management, air quality or noise, in some of the world’s busiest and most beautiful locations. We protect our natural environment and water resources while powering our world for future generations.

Role accountabilities

As a Consultant Ecologist you will coordinate and complete assigned tasks and projects within the Business Unit or project team. You will be engaged on an extensive portfolio of ecology schemes for construction and development projects, including standalone ecology projects and work for internal clients. You will gain experience on a wide and varied portfolio of projects to enhance your skills and test your technical knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Undertake and assist on ecological surveys
• Undertake the production of Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs) and assist with biodiversity strategies and other documents
• Undertake and assist with licence applications, including developing mitigation and monitoring
• Undertake or supervise mitigation and monitoring of licensed work and liaise with statutory authorities
• Participate in training with respect to best practice and survey standards, as appropriate

Qualifications & Experience

• Experience in writing PEAs and contributing to ecological reports such as scoping and baseline sections of EIAs and biodiversity net gain reports
• Understanding of environmental legislation, policy and guidance
• Ability to identify taxa/species across habitat types, using keys and field guides
• Ability to undertake extended Phase 1 habitat surveys
• Ideally hold a survey licence for one or more species
• Adherence to biosecurity and health and safety protocols
• Relevant degree, ideally with postgraduate degree or accreditation
• Member of CIEEM at appropriate level
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to travel when necessary
