Job summary

A local education authority in Brighton is seeking After School Club Assistants to support children in primary school settings. Successful candidates will have a caring disposition and some interest or experience in childcare, as well as the ability to promote participation in various activities. Training will be provided, and the role is fixed term to 31 August 2026, with hours primarily on Thursdays and/or Fridays from 3 to 6 pm. Are you looking to gain experience working with children in a school setting, or do you have experience as a Playworker or working with children?

If you are good with children and have a genuine interest in childcare we would like to hear from you.

Paid weeks per year: 43.89 (inclusive of holiday entitlement)

Fixed term: likely to be to 31 August 2026

Start date: ASAP (on completion of relevant employment checks)

About the role

As an Assistant, previous experience in a similar role is not essential as training will be provided. Suitable candidates will be expected to have a caring and patient manner along with some knowledge or experience of providing opportunities and guidance for our children to participate in and enjoy a varied range of activities.

As a Supervisory Assistant, experience of working with children of a primary age is required as well, along with an interest in the play and emotional needs of children and an understanding of health and safety issues.

The Westdene After School Club has over 50 pupils attending per afternoon and therefore new activity ideas are always welcome.

This post will primarily be supporting children who require additional support, including help with social communication, social play and some self-care routines, including using cutlery and toileting.
