First Hydro Company, part of ENGIE, operates the Dinorwig and Ffestiniog pumped storage hydroelectric power stations in North Wales. These unique stations play a vital role in balancing the UK’s electricity grid.
The Opportunity
We are offering a 12‑month industrial placement for a motivated undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
This is a hands‑on role supporting the daily operations of desktop, server, and mobile systems in a live industrial environment. Alongside this, you will be given projects to assist in our Digital journey and transition to Cloud technologies. Putting these together you will gain a solid base of experience for any career in the IT industry.
The role is site‑based, at Dinorwig Power Station, Llanberis – in the heart of Snowdonia, North Wales.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide first‑line support for desktop PCs, laptops and mobile devices and the applications used by the station staff.
- Maintain and troubleshoot Microsoft 365 applications including Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive.
- Assist with server build and administration, monitoring, patching and backup routines.
- Help maintain high cybersecurity standards and compliance.
- Participate in IT projects such as system upgrades and mobile enhancements.
- Document procedures and contribute to the IT knowledge base.
- Support digitisation initiatives and help improve data workflows across business operations.

Candidate Profile
- You must be studying for a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline at a UK based University and in the penultimate year of your degree course. You should be on track to achieve a 2.1 or above.
- Strong problem‑solving and communication skills.
- Experience in Microsoft Windows environments, both desktop and server would be useful.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Interest in energy, infrastructure and cybersecurity.
- The ability to speak Welsh is desirable, but not essential.
