Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner

The Directorate of Trauma and Orthopaedics is dynamic and forward thinking in our approach to delivering patient care. We have an opportunity to recruit a practitioner to our directorate. You will become part of our team working with both elective and trauma orthopaedic inpatient and outpatients.

You will be working alongside a supportive, multidisciplinary team with a dedicated team of Orthopaedic Practitioners working across the Directorate in wards, clinics and operating theatres. This is an ideal opportunity to progress your career. You will be a dedicated and compassionate Nurse or ODP and proactive in ensuring high quality, evidence-based care. You will need to demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. This is a development opportunity and where appropriate, applicants may be supported to meet the necessary competencies and qualifications (Clinical Skills and Non-Medical Prescribing). In such instances, initial appointment will be made on a band 6 basis.

Main duties of the job

To provide a specialist practitioner role in the assessment and management of a specific patient group

To manage/lead practitioner led clinics in relation to reviewing patients and play a key role in optimising complex treatment regimes, facilitating hospital discharge and preventing avoidable hospital admissions

Provide expert scrub and/or assisting skills in orthopaedic surgical procedures within a defined sub-specialty.

Act as the lead practitioner in theatre for complex elective and emergency cases.

Work closely with orthopaedic consultants to support sub-specialty development and service delivery.

Ensure best practices are followed inline with current guidelines and surgical protocols

Job responsibilities

To coordinate the delivery and development of the specialist service through the use of effective evidence-based practice in line with agreed national standards for patient safety and monitoring.

To contribute to the organisation of multidisciplinary, patient centred care.

To be accountable for the planning and delivery of safe, effective and compassionate patient care in relation to dedicated pathways of care, working as an autonomous practitioner within the specialism.

To provide specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the assessment, management and care of patients within the specialist area.

To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework.

To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC/HCPC Code. To ensure effective communication internally and externally regarding patient care and resources.

Provide education and training to clinical staff across the Trust.

Provide expert specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the management and care of patients within the specialist area.

To provide direct access for patients, either face to face or telephone consultation.

Ability to support the theatre staff with setting up for theatre sessions by ensuring that all necessary theatre equipment and surgical trays are available including the appropriate operating table.

Ability to dismantle and reassemble operating tables and adding extra equipment as necessary.

Assist in the positioning of patients on the operating table and correct placement of diathermy plate prior to the surgical procedure.

Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique in relation to surgery and the operating field.

Undertake surgical scrubbing, gowning and gloving procedures aseptically.

Assist with surgical skin preparation and draping.

To provide assistance to the surgeon during surgical procedures anticipating the needs of the surgeon and responding effectively.

Assist in retracting tissue as per surgeon's directive.

Assist in the use of electrocautery both monopolar and bipolar.

Assist with the closure of wounds once competency has been achieved.

Assist with the application of appropriate dressings.

Assist with the transfer of patients immediately post operatively.

Safely handling, recording and dispatching specimens in line with trust policy.

Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional.
