RNLI Lifesavers are ready to launch to the rescue 24 hours a day, every day. We’re looking for a Technical Surveyor to join our surveying team to provide cover nationally, particularly in Wales, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The role involves conducting surveys annually on every RNLI All Weather Lifeboat and additionally on station launch and recovery assets. As a specialist in mechanical & electrical systems, you will support the Principal and Senior Surveyors to ensure that lifeboats and launching equipment are built and maintained to the highest standards, helping to provide reliable equipment for volunteer crews to save lives at sea.

As a Technical Surveyor, condition surveys of RNLI assets will form a major part of your work. You will travel away regularly, averaging two to four nights away per week. You will also contribute to projects at the RNLI All-Weather Lifeboat Centre at Poole and the Inshore Lifeboat Centre on the Isle of Wight. You will oversee and support contracts for repairs, refits and new construction for Lifeboats and launch and recovery assets at approved external contractor sites. You will work closely with contractors to ensure all work complies with RNLI specifications, providing information or parts as needed to meet contractual obligations. Interpreting drawings against the physical repair during this process will be essential, alongside a proven track record in contract management. You will be involved in tender negotiations, liaising with colleagues in Engineering and Supply, and driving sea trials, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement and QMS (ISO 9001) to achieve the best outcomes for the RNLI.

• Be an experienced engineer with strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, including diesel power plants and hydraulics.
• Able to conduct condition and pre-refit surveys and write concise, detailed reports.
• Strong Project Manager capable of negotiating, reporting on and delivering variable packages of work to an efficient production schedule.
• Good communicator with people at all levels; assertive but tactful.
• Excellent organisational and IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft 365.
• A current clean driving licence is essential; a vehicle will be provided to carry out duties as travel across the UK and Ireland is required.
• As this is a sea-going appointment, you will need to satisfy the institution’s medical and eyesight standards.
