Job summary

A professional translation agency is seeking freelance translators for Sinhala<>English projects. Candidates must demonstrate language expertise and experience in various domains such as legal, medical, and commercial translations. A valid DBS certificate and proof of UK employment eligibility are required. This role offers flexibility on a self-employed contract basis.

Qualifications

  • Native speaker of English and Sinhala with excellent grammar skills.
  • Must provide documented experience in translating.
  • Must be eligible to work in the UK.

  • Translate documents from Sinhala to English and vice versa.
  • Manage and meet translation deadlines effectively.

We are currently recruiting freelance translators for Sinhala<>English), to work on self-employed contract who can help to meet our clients’ needs.

What we expect from our linguists

Essential Skills

  • A Native speaker of the target language (language you are translating into).Excellent writing skills and command of grammar both in your mother tongue and English.
  • Native fluency in source language(s)
  • Demonstrable subject matter expertise specific to the content you translate
  • Knowledge and experience in using CAT tools.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Time management skills and ability to work quickly to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft computer packages

Desirable Skills

  • A solid understanding and in-depth knowledge of language/country-specific cultures usually gained by living and working there for a prolonged period of time.
  • Living, studying, or working in a bilingual environment or working in the language industry
  • Proficiency in InDesign
  • Knowledgeof translation-oriented applications and software is helpful
  • Enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge.

Qualifications, Experience and Memberships

  • At least one of the following plus relevant experience (with documented evidence)
  • A recognised graduate qualification in translation from an institution of higher education;
  • A recognised honours degree in the relevant language
  • MA or postgraduate qualification in Translation
  • A recognised graduate qualification in any other field from an institution of higher education plus two years of full-time professional experience in translating
  • Five years of full-time professional experience in translating
  • CIOL Qualifications Level 7 Diploma in Translation (DipTrans), (DPI level 4&5 in translation for rare languages)
  • CIOL Level 6 Certificate in Translation (CertTrans)

Full qualified membership of a relevant professional body (ITI, CIOL, NRPST, for example)

  • You must be also able to provide:
  • Evidence that you are eligible to work in the UK (if UK based)
  • Provide a valid DBS certificate (or be willing to apply for one if UK based) or Police Check Certificate (non-UK)
  • 2 Professional References
  • Agree to provide test translation free of charge
