Help Us Create a New Centre for People Facing Homelessness in Maidstone

Voluntary

Estimate of time needed: 3-7 hours / week

Working at MHC

By helping us relocate and redevelop our centre, you'll directly support people who are among the most vulnerable in our community - giving them access to support, stability, and a chance to move forward.

This is a high-impact volunteering role that will leave a legacy for years to come.

About the role

We're embarking on a major and exciting project: to develop a new, integrated Day Centre and Supported Accommodation facility for people experiencing homelessness in Maidstone.

To bring this vision to life, we’re looking for a skilled and committed volunteer Project Manager to help lead the journey - from identifying and acquiring a suitable site or building, to working with architects and local authorities, and overseeing the design and build process.

This is a rare opportunity to help shape a lasting legacy for Maidstone, one that will change lives and provide a sense of safety, dignity and belonging for years to come.

What will you be doing?

You’ll work closely with our board of trustees and local partners to:

Manage the full lifecycle of the project: discovery, feasibility, purchase, design, planning permission, and delivery.

Liaise with property agents and identify suitable buildings or sites.

Coordinate architects, surveyors, and other professionals to explore options and create designs.

Navigate planning processes and engage with Maidstone Borough Council and other statutory bodies.

Oversee budgets, risks, timescales, and procurement processes.

Why Join Us?

This is more than a building project - it’s a chance to help create a safe, welcoming, and life-changing space for people who need it most. You’ll be joining a small but passionate team of staff, trustees, and volunteers who are committed to delivering real change in our town.

What we are looking for

We’re seeking someone who:

Has experience managing building, property, or refurbishment projects - ideally involving planning permission or change-of-use.

Can confidently coordinate professionals across disciplines (architects, surveyors, local authorities, contractors).

Is a great communicator, organised, and proactive in managing risks and keeping momentum.

Shares our passion for helping people experiencing homelessness.

Ideally knows Maidstone and understands the importance of place-based, community-rooted services.

Is available for site visits to local properties and meet architects etc.

You don’t need experience in the homelessness or charity sector - just the drive to use your skills to make a meaningful difference.

How to Apply

Please apply by emailing projects@homelesscare.org.uk with a cover letter and CV detailing why you are interested in this role and your relevant experience.
