A local volunteer organization is seeking volunteers to support youth programs focused on fishing and mental health in Uttlesford. Job description
Overview

We are looking for volunteers to support our successful programs:

  • Get Fishing sessions held at Little Easton Manor, Dunmow on a Saturday afternoon. These sessions will run from April to September each year.
  • Holiday Activities and Food programme – currently running at Little Easton Manor; we are looking to increase our provision with sessions in Basildon and Thurrock in 2025. These sessions are fun in the Easter and Summer holidays.

Our sessions are aimed at promoting and supporting mental health and wellbeing. In addition to supporting the young people how to fish you will be there to listen to whatever they want to talk about. This could be about their family, school, hobbies, pets etc. Through learning how to fish the young people will also be learning new skills such as decision making, problem solving, communication.

All our sessions are light hearted and young person centred. If they don’t want to fish and just want to sit and talk that is fine.

Skills

Due to the nature of our work and the diversity and vulnerability of our participants, volunteers needs to have:

  • Good all round communication skills.
  • Empathy and understanding.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
  • Leadership/Coaching skills.
  • Organisational skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Driving licence – due to the locations of our settings.

Desirable but not essential

  • Be a seasoned angler.
  • Hold an Angling Trust Volunteer Event Support Award.
  • Hold an Angling Trust Lead Event Coach Level 2 qualification.
  • Hold an alternative Coaching in Sport qualification.
  • Experience of working in a Mental Health related programme.

All volunteers will be required to undertake a DBS Check prior to commencing their role.

All volunteers will be expected to complete the following mandatory training:

  • Angling Trust Volunteer Event Support Award) if not Level 2 Coach

Holiday Activities and Food programme in school holidays - weekdays 9.30-2.30pm. Get Fishing sessions - Saturday 12.00-4.00
