Job description
Overview

As a result of our continued success in securing work for our Occupational Hygiene Team, we are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and dynamic individual for the role of Trainee Occupational Hygienist to join our team in Wakefield.

Location: Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England.

If you are interested in a rewarding career, working for a highly respected, successful and established nationwide company, with over 30 years' trading experience, this is a great opportunity for you!

Responsibilities

The role will initially focus on shadowing qualified and experienced occupational hygienists whilst they carry out site work, to gain experience and provide a thorough understanding of the services that we provide to our clients, including a strong focus on report writing.

It is estimated that a minimum training period of approximately 6 months would need to be completed, before attending industry specific formal courses via the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS).

This training period would include a significant amount of study time to become familiar with approved sampling procedures and relevant UK legislation, required to compliment the site experience gained. The role would require you to liaise with third party laboratories in ordering sampling media and submitting samples for analysis following site work, whilst maintaining a Chain of Custody. As well as assisting the team in responding to incoming enquiries in relation to the services offered by the department and gathering information using enquiry response forms and/or telephone conversations.

Person Specification
  • A strong scientific background at “A” level standard
  • Have an understanding of basic Health and Safety requirements within the UK, regarding employee protection and employers’ duties
  • Have a natural inquisitive nature to ask questions and investigate to obtain the “Full Picture” of site conditions and work practices on client’s sites and to gain an understanding of a massive range of industrial processes.
  • Be able to demonstrate good time management skills.
  • Have a flexible approach to working hours, as the role can require early starts and/or late finishes, with the occasional requirement for weekend working.
  • Be able to work away from home on occasions.
  • Be motivated and show initiative, as some studying will be expected outside of normal working hours.
  • Have a strong customer focussed work ethic, an exemplary professional attitude and be able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills.
  • Hold a full driving license. Although no vehicle will be offered during the initial training period, once competency is achieved, a company car will be provided.
  • Have excellent oral communication skills and be capable of writing clear, well presented, and accurate reports.
  • Fully documented driving licence on CV or covering letter
  • Be willing to provide an enhanced DBS disclosure, the cost of which will be reimbursed by the company.
What We Can Offer You
  • The hours of work are 40 per week Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm (with some flexibility required to meet the needs of the clients).
  • A minimum starting salary of £25,646.40 which would rise, significantly, once qualified and authorised to undertake work unsupervised.
  • A commitment to create and drive a bespoke Personal Development Plan, formalised by annual appraisal.
  • 22 days' annual leave per annum (which rises to 25 after 3 years and 27 days after 5 years), plus 8 statutory bank holidays.
  • An additional day’s leave for your birthday, or the closest working day.
  • A generous overtime remuneration policy, including paid travel time.
  • Work-Life balance guarantee.
  • Company paid Healthcare and Wellbeing plan with Simplyhealth (long service award applies at 3 and 5 years).
  • Auto-enrolment into a company pension with Aegon, into which the company will contribute 3% of qualifying earnings.
  • 2 weeks contractual sick pay after 6 months of continuous service (rising to 4 weeks per annum, after 1 year of continuous service).
  • The role will require the candidate to obtain a number of internationally recognised BOHS professional qualifications, working towards gaining Chartered status and to develop their role within our company.
  • Provision of a company car once qualified and authorised to work alone.
  • £1000 staff referral incentive
