Job description

We are recruiting non-graduate trainee accountants to join the Sheffield office of UHY Hacker Young.

The office has a strong and growing audit portfolio and the graduate role focuses on those clients. Successful applicants will however benefit from a much broader training on non audit accounts engagements, preparing financial statements and tax returns, better equipping them for more senior roles later in their careers.

On-the-job training and studying towards your professional qualification will enable them to gain a full understanding of the technical aspects of audit and accountancy. During your contract, you will initially study towards the AAT or ATT qualification and progress on to study ACA with the ICAEW to become a chartered accountant. You will be enrolled onto classroom tuition at our nominated training centre to complete the AAT or ATT qualification under an apprenticeship programme.

You will:

  • Develop an understanding of our clients and their businesses
  • Complete audit programmes and form conclusions on each individual test and section completed
  • Highlight issues and problems for the attention of senior auditors or managers
  • Become familiar with our audit and accounting software

From day one you will engage with our clients at their offices (at times this will involve travelling to client’s premises and working away) and you will be expected to:

  • Work as part of a team to undertake a variety of audit and accountancy tasks
  • Discuss queries with client staff, obtaining relevant information and explanations
  • Resolve queries, whether of an audit or accountancy nature
  • Obtain an understanding of related services such as Corporate Tax through on-the-job and structured training
  • Attend a range of internal training sessions including industry experience and soft skills
  • Communicate in a professional manner with clients
  • Work as part of a team – this is essential to your role at every level and will also require self-management as your role develops
  • Understand from your manager the scope of tasks allocated and objectives to be achieved
  • Keep seniors and managers fully informed of any issues and problems
  • Ensure work is completed to a level agreed with the manager and recorded clearly and concisely
  • Prioritise tasks whilst monitoring time against budget
  • Support department events and procedures and build relationships within UHY
Person specifications

To be successful in this role you must:

  • Be proactive and committed to delivering first class professional client service
  • Enjoy working effectively as part of a team
  • Be dedicated and motivated to studying towards the ACA qualification
  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Have a high level of general commercial awareness
Preferred academic requirements
  • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent) at a minimum of grade 6
  • We do understand the challenge of achieving consistently high academic results so we are open to meeting applicants who believe they have what it takes to be successful at our firm despite having grades outside these requirements
Remuneration and benefits
  • Hybrid working subject to successful completion of probation
  • Free car parking
  • 23 days’ holiday (rising to 26 days in line with period of service once training is complete), additional paid leave on your birthday and Christmas Eve, plus standard bank and public holidays
  • Contribution into an auto enrolled pension scheme
  • Payment of one professional subscription per year
  • Commission for introducing new clients/work or for introducing new staff
