Accessing medical knowledge rapidly and easily at the point of care is still very difficult for healthcare professionals. Eolas Medical is transforming how critical medical knowledge is accessed at the point of care.

We have a vision that the future of healthcare ensures that the world’s medical knowledge is queried, seamlessly in real time, for every clinical decision ever made for a patient. We’re building and deploying the “brain of an AI doctor”.

Designed and developed by doctors, the platform aggregates and indexes tens of thousands of items of medical content, enabling rapid and accurate decision‑making. It’s currently being used by hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals globally, over 85% of acute NHS hospitals, 40% of all doctors in Ireland and also used in world‑leading institutions in the US including Stanford Healthcare, Mass General and Boston Children’s Hospital.

We’ve just closed a $12million Series A fundraise and we’re now hiring our second back end engineer to work alongside our extremely experienced Head of Backend and VP of engineering as well as closing working with a team of doctors helping build the next generation of AI‑powered clinical knowledge tools.

If you are an experienced senior backend engineer this is one of those rare roles where your decisions will literally influence how doctors treat patients every day.

The role

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll play a key role in building and scaling the core infrastructure that powers our platform. This is a hands‑on role requiring deep experience in backend engineering, cloud systems, and architectural thinking.

We’re cloud‑native platform. Experience with the following will be highly desirable:

• AWS – Lambda, API Gateway, Cognito, S3 and OpenSearch
• Node.js / TypeScript and Python
• DynamoDB and PostgreSQL
• Serverless Architecture and microservices patterns.
• Infrastructure tools like Terraform, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Security and compliance practices, especially relevant in healthcare.

What You’ll Do:

• Design and build robust, scalable cloud‑first backend systems.
• Contribute to infrastructure‑as‑code practices and DevOps tooling.
• Build and maintain LLM‑powered features such as RAG pipelines for clinical information.
• Develop and optimise agentic document extraction workflows to process clinical PDFs, policies, and handbooks into structured formats.
• Collaborate closely with our product and frontend teams to deliver high‑impact features.
• Write clean, well‑tested code and guide best practices across the engineering team.
• Take ownership of system reliability, performance, and security in a healthcare context.

What We’re Looking For:

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience in production environments.
• Strong AWS proficiency – hands‑on experience building and deploying systems in the cloud.
• Familiarity with embedding models, chunking strategies, and semantic search.
• Experience working in a small team or startup environment.
• A pragmatic problem‑solver who balances speed with sustainability.
• Passion for writing maintainable, scalable code.
• Knowledge of security and compliance best practices (e.g. HIPAA/GDPR, NHS DTAC, SOC 2).
• Bonus: experience in healthcare, medtech, or regulated environments.
