Job description
School Crossing Patrol Officer – St John’s Green Primary School, Colchester

Location: Colchester
Employment type: Permanent, Part Time (7.5 hours per week)
Salary: £13.00 per hour

About the role: Support schools once in the morning and once in the afternoon, ensuring the safety of all pedestrians crossing the road to and from the school and surrounding areas. The role requires a punctual and reliable individual who is approachable, enjoys engaging with the public and works a field‑based, operational style. Work hours are approximately 45 minutes between 08:00‑09:00 in the morning and 45 minutes between 14:45‑15:45 in the afternoon, for 39 weeks of the academic year. Uniform, equipment and training will be provided; a holiday pay element is included.

Responsibilities
  • Consider the needs of people with disabilities, especially those with mobility impairments, at the crossing point.
  • Maintain regular contact with the schools served by the crossing.
  • Assess risks associated with operating at the crossing site, identify problems and report defects to the supervisor.
  • Assist in preparing reports on accidents, failures to stop incidents and other incidents occurring at the crossing site.
  • Ensure all uniform and equipment provided are maintained in good condition, requesting replacements when needed.
  • Give clear signals to drivers when stopping traffic and ensure that traffic remains at rest until the road at the crossing point is clear of pedestrians.
Requirements

Punctual, reliable, approachable and able to engage with the public. Must be able to work the specified hours during the academic year and be able to perform duties in a field‑based environment. Basic comprehension of safety procedures and willingness to follow training and supervision are essential.
