Job description

Since 1898, we have helped customers complete more than 25,000 projects in 160 countries on all continents that have created jobs, grown economies, improved the resiliency of the world’s infrastructure, increased access to energy, resources, and vital services, and made the world a safer, cleaner place.

Differentiated by the quality of our people and our relentless drive to deliver the most successful outcomes, we align our capabilities to our customers’ objectives to create a lasting positive impact. We serve the Infrastructure; Nuclear, Security & Environmental; Energy; Mining & Metals, and the Manufacturing and Technology markets. Our services span from initial planning and investment, through start‑up and operations.

Known as one of the four most hazardous buildings in Western Europe, the Sellafield Pile Fuel Cladding Silo (PFCS) was commissioned in 1952 to safely store radioactive cladding – pieces of metal tubes used for uranium fuel rods in some of the UK’s earliest nuclear reactors. The UK government has partnered with Bechtel Cavendish Nuclear Solutions to deliver a system that will allow Sellafield to retrieve the decades-old waste, package it safely, and dispose of it permanently.

The project is part of a UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority program to decommission nuclear storage facilities dating to the early 1950s. The project entails the detailed design, procurement, manufacture, works testing, delivery to site, installation and commissioning of a complex system for cutting access holes into the silo that include shielded access doors, a robotic waste retrieval arm, waste transporters, and repackaging plants. The team also is utilizing virtual reality and mockup training facilities to enhance operations.

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the design and procurement phases of a high‑hazard reduction project within the nuclear industry. The successful candidate will apply APM best practices to manage multidisciplinary teams, complex supply chains, and stakeholder interfaces, ensuring delivery against stringent safety, quality, and contractual standards.

"This position is designated as part‑time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in‑person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in‑person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership".

Major Responsibilities:
  • Lead a diverse team of professionals, including apprentices, graduates, and experienced design engineers. Provide mentorship, coaching, and professional development to support team growth and performance. Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture aligned with project goals.
Project Planning & Execution
  • Develop and manage detailed project plans for design and procurement phases. Ensure alignment with strategic objectives, technical requirements, and stakeholder expectations. Drive project execution within agreed timelines and quality standards.
Supply Chain Management
  • Oversee UK and international supply chains, including suppliers with limited nuclear experience. Ensure supplier compliance with nuclear industry standards and project specifications. Promote effective collaboration and performance across the supply chain.
Compliance & Contract Management
  • Ensure strict adherence to NEC3 contract conditions and governance frameworks. Manage contract deliverables, change control, and risk mitigation strategies. Maintain transparency and accountability throughout the project lifecycle.
Schedule & Cost Control
  • Prepare and monitor project schedules and budgets, including Estimates at Completion (EACs). Track progress against milestones and proactively manage deviations. Ensure financial performance aligns with project forecasts and funding constraints.
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Act as the primary interface with internal and external stakeholders, including the customer. Communicate project status, risks, and opportunities effectively. Balance competing priorities to maintain stakeholder satisfaction and alignment.
  • Identify, assess, and manage project risks (threats and opportunities). Develop and implement mitigation and contingency plans. Ensure compliance with nuclear safety and regulatory requirements.
Resource Management
  • Plan and allocate resources to optimise delivery efficiency. Monitor utilisation and adjust plans to meet evolving project needs.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Requires bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) and relevant experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Proven experience managing complex projects in the nuclear industry, particularly in design and procurement phases.
  • Strong understanding of APM Body of Knowledge and project management methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience with NEC3 contracts and high‑hazard environments.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage cross‑functional teams and international supply chains.
