US Department of Veterans Affairs provided pay range: $43,209.00/yr – $70,538.00/yr. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience.

Summary

These Nursing Assistant positions are within the Community Living Center (CLC) of the Nursing – Operations section at VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System in Leeds, MA.

Qualifications
  • Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
  • United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience or Education or Training:
    • Six months of general experience with the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills to perform the work of a NA.
    • OR One year of education above high school with courses related to the NA occupation.
    • OR Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation‑related training course or program of less than one year may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS‑3.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 – Part II – Chapter 3 – Section A – Paragraph 3j.
  • Grade Requirements: Creditable Experience, Knowledge of Current Practice, Part‑Time Experience, Grade Determinations (GS‑3, GS‑4, GS‑5).
Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship; non‑citizens only under specific circumstances.
  • Education, training, or experience in nursing‑related fields.
  • Proof of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs) as outlined in the qualifications section.
Physical Requirements
  • Varying periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Bending, stooping, lifting, kneeling, pushing wheelchairs, geri‑chairs, litters, and similar activities.
  • May be required to perform CPR or psychiatric intervention at a unit‑specific level.
Duties
  • Perform a range of nursing‑care activities while assigned to the CLC.
  • Provide activities of daily living and documentation.
  • Escort Veterans/residents safely on and off station.
  • Follow standard precautions and infection‑control protocols.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic health‑care provider skills.
  • Provide 1:1 or safety sitter nursing care to Veterans/residents requiring restraints or special observation.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for Veterans/residents, staff, significant others, and visitors.
  • Assist with comprehensive physical care, motivational support, assessment of data reflective of veteran status, and interpretation of information.
  • Communicate effectively with patients/residents, families, and other health professionals.
  • Identify changes in resident condition and report in a timely manner; initiate appropriate action under guidance.
  • Report directly to the Nurse Manager of the assigned unit.
  • Support the Medical Center and Service missions by meeting the needs of customers while upholding VA Core Values ("I CARE").
Compensation and Benefits
  • Work Schedule: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm with rotation.
  • Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days of annual paid time off per year (including annual leave, sick leave, and federal holidays).
  • Parental Leave: Up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave after 12 months of employment.
  • Child Care Subsidy: Eligible for up to 25% of childcare costs for families below $144,000 income, after 60 days of employment.
  • Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contribution by VA Insurance.
  • Health and dental insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care, and many federal insurance programs available during and after employment.
