Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Antenatal Services at St Mary’s Hospital for aNon-Medical Prescribing Diabetes Specialist Nurseto join our multidisciplinary maternity team.

The post holder will provide expert, evidence-based care and leadership for women with diabetes during the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods. You will work autonomously, collaborating closely with obstetricians, endocrinologists, midwives, and allied health professionals to deliver safe, high-quality, and holistic care.

As the lead midwife for diabetes in pregnancy, you will be responsible for developing and implementing clinical pathways, providing specialist advice, conducting clinical audits, and contributing to guideline development in line with national standards. You will act as a role model and educator, supporting clinical staff and students in the management of diabetes in pregnancy, and will be an advocate for women’s choice and empowerment in managing their condition.

This role offers the opportunity to make a significant contribution to improving outcomes for women with diabetes, enhancing continuity of care, and shaping service development within a leading maternity unit.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide specialist midwifery or nursing care, advice, and management for women with diabetes in pregnancy, working autonomously within professional and clinical guidelines.
  • Lead the diabetes-in-pregnancy service within antenatal care, developing, delivering, and evaluating individualised treatment plans.
  • Prescribe and adjust medication as an independent non-medical prescriber, including insulin initiation and dose adjustment, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Support and educate women to manage their own diabetes effectively, promoting empowerment and self-care.
  • Undertake regular clinical audit, evaluation, and research to ensure care delivery aligns with evidence-based national standards.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of local and Trust-wide policies, protocols, and pathways for diabetes management in pregnancy.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and supervision to midwifery, nursing, and medical staff, fostering a culture of learning and clinical excellence.
  • Act as a key link between maternity services and the wider diabetes team to ensure effective communication and seamless care pathways.
  • Participate in clinical governance, quality improvement, and service development initiatives to enhance patient safety and experience.
  • Maintain professional registration, CPD, and compliance with the NMC/HCPC Code and Trust policies.
