Hospitality Team Member

YHA York

Permanent, flexible contract

15 - 42.5 hours per week

£12.21 per hour, rising to £12.71 per hour from 1st March 2026 in line with National Living Wage (applies to all, including those under the age of 21)

Are you looking for a fun and varied job in hospitality? YHA York are looking for a Hospitality Team Member to join their team! The role concentrates mostly on the general hostel duties, but there may be the opportunity to support the Activities Team.

Situated on the leafy bank of the River Ouse, YHA York is a stone’s throw away from York’s quirky and historic city centre to one side and the gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside on the other. York is the perfect place for history, art and nature lovers alike. YHA York really does a bit of everything! We welcome families, individual travellers and tonnes of groups of all ages, as well as running our local cafe and hosting events. We are proud of our team’s creativity and hard work. Whether you are making beds, preparing meals, delivering activities with up to 30 young people, checking guest in or serving on our café, you will directly impact all of the people who walk through our doors.

As a Team Member, you’ll play a key role in making our guests’ experiences memorable. Your efforts will be at the core of our mission to provide exceptional hospitality, whether it is taking a school group on a city tour, ensuring our bedrooms are clean, welcoming guests on check in or rustling up a hearty breakfast. You will be part of a dynamic and driven team, focused on ensuring YHA York has the best possible impact on all who come to our site. We are incredibly lucky to see the impact that YHA can have on young lives, and our Activities Team get to work directly with the young people who are most effected by all that YHA stands for. We welcome a range of groups, leading tours around the city and attractions, teaching children how to bake like a Viking, create Roman mosaics and decipher Norse runes, and many more!

What will you be doing as a Hospitality Team Member?

We are a friendly team and will provide the training required for you to undertake the role. However, there is plenty for you to get stuck into from day one, including:

  • Providing great customer service to all our customers, members and guests.
  • Working on reception, offering insights about the hostel and the local area. Ensuring every guest feels informed and welcomed.
  • Using our systems for efficient guest check-ins and check-outs, food and beverage sales and service.
  • Carrying out housekeeping duties, ensuring a comfortable, clean environment for all visitors.
  • Assisting in the preparation of food and serving food and drinks with genuine warmth, hospitality, and pride that will influence in more sales.
What Skills and Experience do you need to be a Hospitality Team Member?

Our Hospitality Team Members undertake a wide range of customer facing duties within the hostel, delivering an excellent service to all guests and visitors.

To provide this service to our guests we are looking for the following qualities in our Hospitality Team Members:

  • Experience of working face to face with customers
  • Experience of working in a team – can help others to achieve a common goal
  • Excellent timekeeping, with flexibility to cover different shifts – punctual, can work to deadlines
  • Ability to manage varying pressures, include peaks in workload demands – can prioritise, able to deal with conflicting duties
  • Knowledge and understanding of the core purpose of YHA – what YHA does and how we do it
  • Demonstration of our HEART values – they’re part of everything we do, and we look for people who bring them to life in their everyday work
