Qualifications

Job overview

Working as part of the pre-operative team, the role encompasses prepping for elective surgical patients booked clinic appointments, using the hospital IT systems, doing the physical pre-operative tests required, communicating effectively with the wider pre-operative team and prioritising patient care and patient needs. It is a fast-paced and diverse role.

Main duties of the job
  • Perform pre-operative testing daily, such as blood tests, MRSA swabbing, ECG, urine samples, and basic observations within a 20 minute timeframe per patient.
  • Organise your workload in a fast-paced clinic, seeing patients face-to-face via patient booked clinics and patient walk-ins.
  • Using good IT skills, prepare the patient paperwork and test requirements using the hospital IT systems following national/local hospital policies.
  • Regularly communicate with the wider pre-op team and demonstrate good team skills.
  • Be proficient in ECG recording, venepuncture and basic observation, escalating any concerns.
  • Keep the Unit stocked with all the necessary equipment, regularly auditing supply and demand.
  • Assist patients as necessary, showing a caring, compassionate nature.
  • Follow nurse-led instructions and national/local hospital policies as necessary.
  • Risk assess all patient care and be able to use your own initiative to maintain patient safety.
  • Respect individuality and diversity of patients, their carers and your colleagues.
  • Using attention to detail, promote patient safety and reduce patient risk.
  • Be adaptable and flexible to the pre-op policy changes as they happen, keeping regularly updated.
  • Engage in the Improving Together methodology practiced in the Trust.
  • Help ensure a good flow of the patients through pre-op with prompt time-keeping/workload management.
  • Escalate any issues relating to the Unit to the Nurse-in-Charge as necessary.

Education & Training
