Job summary

A humanitarian organization in the UK is seeking a Head of Fleet to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for their fleet management function. Job description
Head of Fleet

Location: UK Flexible with some travel to UK sites required.

Salary: £55,206 to £60,000 per annum (depending on experience) (plus ILW, if residing & working in London) (DOE)

Hours: 35 per week

Contract: Permanent

Could you provide strategic leadership, subject matter expertise and operational oversight of the British Red Cross's (BRC) fleet management function, ensuring the fleet supports organisational strategy effectively, safely, and sustainably? Could you be responsible for driving performance, value, compliance, and innovation across the fleet portfolio, while maintaining strong relationships with vendors and internal stakeholders?

What will a day in the life of the Head of Fleet involve?
  • Ownership of a comprehensive fleet strategy and new operating model that aligns with the organisations objectives and supports improved delivery of services, bringing consistency of practice to our diverse fleet operations.
  • Optimisation of a fleet of +300 vehicles across health, crisis response, retail and CEMAS, improving service levels, defining vehicle lifecycle, specifications, lease v buy decisions and driving initiatives to derive greater value and reduce organisational risk.
  • Develop, monitor and report on fleet SLA and KPIs. Leads the development of data and reporting to internal stakeholders and business partners.
  • Ensure the fleet management partner complies with all legal and regulatory requirements (e.g. driver safety, emissions, insurance).
  • Act as the primary liaison with the fleet management partner, developing and monitoring performance against agreed SLA.
  • As the subject matter expert, communicate and manage the transition and ongoing relationship with internal users for all fleet activity (e.g. drivers, service representatives, and all staff and volunteers).
  • Working with the supplier, identify and implement opportunities for fleet optimisation, including vehicle technology, EV transition, and predictive maintenance.
To be a successful Head of Fleet, what will you need?
  • Proven experience in fleet management and operations, ideally within emergency services, charity, or public sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead strategic, organisation-wide initiatives and manage complex stakeholder environments.
  • Knowledge of UK transport regulations, compliance frameworks, and risk management practices.
  • Strong understanding and experience of outsourced service models and contract management.
  • Experience with electric vehicle (EV) transition and sustainability initiatives.
  • Familiarity with telematics, vehicle technology, fleet analytics, and digital fleet platforms.
  • Experience of leadership through significant organisational change.
  • Fleet management qualification and/or registration of professional body or equivalent.
