Job summary

A language service provider in the UK is seeking freelance Machine-Translation Post-Editors to assist with various assignments. Candidates should have relevant qualifications in translation and demonstrable experience in post-editing. This role requires meticulous attention to detail and excellent writing skills. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work with a diverse range of topics, including legal and medical content.

Qualifications

  • Must have at least one relevant qualification with documented evidence.
  • Five years experience without a relevant degree is acceptable.
  • Experience in a bilingual environment is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Edit machine translation output for accuracy and grammar.
  • Research terminology and context.
  • Work to meet client deadlines.

What we expect from our linguists

Essential Skills

  • A Native speaker of the target language. Excellent writing skills and command of grammar both in your mother tongue and English
  • Native fluency in source language(s)
  • Demonstrable subject matter expertise specific to the content you are editing
  • Demonstrable experience with post-editing machine translation output or have completed post-editing training
  • Demonstrable understanding of the difference between full and light post-editing
  • Ability to identify and correct MT errors
  • Demonstrable ability to research terminology and context
  • Knowledge and experience in using CAT tools and MT-integrated environments
  • Ability to work with translation memory and terminology databases
  • Attention to detail
  • Time management skills and ability to work quickly to meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft computer packages

Desirable Skills

  • A solid understanding and in-depth knowledge of language/country-specific cultures usually gained by living and working there for a prolonged period of time
  • Living, studying, or working in a bilingual environment or working in the language industry
  • Knowledge of translation-oriented applications and software is helpful
  • Enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge

Qualifications, Experience and Memberships

  • At least one of the following plus relevant experience (with documented evidence)
  • A recognised graduate qualification in translation from an institution of higher education
  • A recognised honours degree in the relevant language
  • MA or postgraduate qualification in Translation
  • DipTrans
  • A recognised graduate qualification in any other field from an institution of higher education plus two years of full-time professional experience in translating
  • Five years of full-time professional experience in translating if you do not have a relevant degree certificate
  • CIOL Qualifications Level 7 Diploma in Translation (DipTrans), (DPI level 4&5 in translation for rare languages)
  • CIOL Level 6 Certificate in Translation (CertTrans)

Fully qualified membership of a relevant professional body (ITI, CIOL, NRPST, for example) is preferable.

You must also be able to provide:

  • Evidence that you are eligible to work in the UK (if UK based)
  • Provide a valid DBS certificate (or be willing to apply for one if UK based) or Police Check Certificate (non-UK)
  • 2 Professional References
  • Agree to provide test editing project free of charge
