We have a great opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Thorn Cross, working as an English Teacher. This role is offered on a 12 month fixed term, part‑time basis, working 18.5 hours per week.

Site Information

HMP / YOI Thorn Cross is based near Warrington, Cheshire. The prison operates as a Category D open resettlement prison for Young Adult and Adult Male prisoners. The team’s aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe and where causes of prison stress are minimised. The prison’s mission is to provide a secure, safe, and rehabilitative environment that encourages positive change and prepares inmates for a successful reintegration into society.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

  • Hold a teaching qualification and relevant subject specialist qualification – with a commitment to obtain the outstanding qualification within 12 months.
  • Hold a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
  • Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)/ Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) or commit to work towards within a specified timeframe (Applies to Teachers in YOI only).
  • Have experience creating stimulating, vibrant environments which are conducive to learning and motivational for learners.
  • Have experience of achieving quality targets.
  • Have experience producing accurate and timely reports.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate an ability to motivate and enthuse learners.
  • Have excellent organisational skills to prioritise workload to meet deadlines and targets.
  • Demonstrate positive team working.
  • Track record of effective teaching in delivering in subject (Desirable).
  • Track record of working effectively with people presenting with challenging behaviour (Desirable).
