Overview

HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Current Opportunity

Senior Environmental Sustainability Advisor

Location

Based at Fort Dunlop – this location sits on the eastern edge of Birmingham, adjacent to the M6 motorway, providing excellent transport links into the city and across the region. Fort Dunlop serves as a key hub within IPT Area North, supporting operations that span multiple sublots and regional activities. Its strategic position makes it an important point for coordination and access, with proximity to major infrastructure routes ensuring connectivity to both the Central Region and wider project areas.

Role Responsibilities
  • Act as the primary environmental lead for Routewide & Logistics teams, ensuring legal, client, and contractual environmental requirements are understood and met across all works.
  • Ensure compliance and assurance by coordinating with sublot environmental teams, reviewing RAMS and documentation, conducting regular site inspections, managing consents, and reporting/incidents through HS2 systems.
  • Develop, implement, and improve environmental processes, documentation, training, and consistency initiatives across Routewide disciplines.
  • Monitor, analyse, and report environmental performance, including data collation, trend analysis, incident tracking, and producing monthly dashboards for senior leadership.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in key environmental areas (carbon, water, noise/vibration, air quality, ecology, heritage) while supporting audits, mobilisation/demobilisation, and maintaining compliance systems.

Strong communicator with excellent interpersonal, planning, and organisational skills, able to work independently, challenge appropriately, and collaborate effectively to achieve compliance.

Adaptable and proactive, willing to take on varied duties, undertake training, and work across multiple sites with a full driving licence.

Committed to health, safety, and welfare, with solid IT proficiency across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Technically knowledgeable, with a good understanding of environmental legislation, standards, and construction environmental management, supported by a relevant environmental or scientific degree or equivalent experience.

Desirable professional development, including IEMA membership (Associate or progressing to Practitioner), ISO 14001 internal auditing skills, EMS experience, and familiarity with HS2.
