This is not just a strength and conditioning role; it is a chance to define the physical standard for a sport undergoing an exciting evolution. You will be developing human performance capability at the heart of our WCP aiming for Los Angeles 2028 and guiding our Pathway athletes with sights on Brisbane 2032. Opportunities to attend camps and competitions will upskill your understanding to best physically prepare our athletes to train and compete in the disciplines of running, swimming and obstacle racing. You will be a key architect of athlete training plans, particularly during the busy competition season over the summer.

About the Job

Do you want to build the next generation of “physically dominant” Olympic champions? Pentathlon GB is looking for a Lead Physical Preparation Coach to join our World Class Programme (WCP) at the National Training in Bath.

The Mission

As our Physical Preparation Lead Coach, you won’t just be “in the gym” – you will be an integral part of the performance planning and coaching process.

You will:
  • Design the Blueprint: Create and implement the foundational framework for physical development, mapping athletes on their physical journey.
  • Build the Athlete: Create and lead elite S&C programs that develop robust, dominant athletes capable of conquering the new Modern Pentathlon format.
  • Integrate & Innovate: Work at the heart of a Multi‑Disciplinary Team (MDT), collaborating with the Lead Performance Coach and Sports Science & Medicine Team to blend training science and coaching for high‑performance.
  • Coach Across Boundaries: Lead sessions in the gym while supporting physical disciplines like Running, Swimming and Obstacle Course Racing.
  • Align & Educate: Shape the future of the sport by developing an S&C framework and delivering education to coaches and pathway athletes.
  • Field Operations: Provide coaching support at camps and international competitions to ensure our athletes execute when it matters most.
Who You Are

We are looking for a coach who thrives in high‑performance environments, brings energy, knowledge and the ability to quickly build trust with athletes and coaches. The balance of scientific precision and elite coaching skills is critical in this role.

The Essentials
  • Educated: A degree in Sports Science or a related field (specializing in physical preparation).
  • Experienced: Extensive experience coaching elite athletes with a proven track record of using diagnostics to drive performance.
  • Technical Expert: You know how to technically coach lifting, manage training loads, and adapt programs based on data.
  • Skilful Communicator: You can translate complex data into actionable insights for athletes and coaches alike.
The “Extra Mile” (Desirable)
  • Higher degree or professional accreditation (UKSCA, NSCA CSCS).
  • Specific coaching experience in Pentathlon disciplines or multisport roles.

Required Experience & Skills
  • Extensive experience in strength and conditioning support for athletes to improve performance.
  • Experience analysing sport demands and using diagnostics to develop individual programmes.
  • Ability to coach progressive physical changes safely, including technical lifting instruction.
  • Understanding training science, recovery, and concurrent training methodology and periodisation.
  • Experience with diagnostics and monitoring to inform coaching and modify programmes.
  • Knowledge of physiology, anatomy and injury/fatigue management.
  • Excellent coaching skills to motivate behavioural change and adapt to learning styles.
  • Understanding of high‑performance athlete and coach needs.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary teams for physical preparation.
  • Communication of complex data to diverse audiences.
